Since the explosion (very nice work on that btw) goes trough the ground, and there's always shown a hit (white dot when you strike something) it's hard to see if you've hit or missed a target.
When you shoot behind a gun emplacement, it looks like you hit it (since the strike dot shows up on the gun emplacement itself)
