Jury duty - good or bad?
« on: January 09, 2004, 03:48:13 PM »
For me, I'd love to sit on a jury.  I think it would be fascinating.  Unfortunately, the last time I was called down to the courthouse for jury pool voir dire, I was excused because I knew the court stenographer, the court clerk, and the judge (I worked for the office of the Clerk of Circuit Court at the time) and I think they flagged my record because I haven't been called in the 15 years since then.

Anyway, if I was called for jury duty, there are a couple of trials I'd love to sit in on.  One of them is the USA vs Lea W. Fastow trial.  Mrs. Fastow failed to reply to a plea deal offer this afternoon, so it looks like she'll be in court.  She wanted no more than 5 months of prison time, but I suspect the government wanted a whole lot more than that.  To me, 5 months is nothing compared to what she's accused of doing.

Here's a copy of the indictment.

Some fascinating stuff in here.  Shell corporations, defrauding the government for alternate energy subsidies, skimming money from earnings, "creative accounting", unsecured loans to cronies, misleading investors.  I'd love to see the evidence to support their accusations, and just how much of it survived the all-night Arthur Andersen paper-shredding parties.

Anyone who dodges jury duty is not only shirking a basic responsibility of citizenship, but missing an opportunity to really understand how the law in this country.  I've only been selected to actually sit on a jury once in my life, but it was a real eye-opener.  What you see on TV is nothing like what it's like in the real courtroom.  It is paradoxically less exciting but more interesting.  Never pass up the chance if you serve.

There was an article in USAToday how poor Enron execs are amazed because prison term means TIME AWAY FROM KIDS !!!
oh my goodness !!! You mean I could be caught and punished ?
They didn't say that in MBA classes!!!

Frucking silly. They are trying to make a deal so that Mommy gets off in 4 months and daddy takes a 10 year rap. Heck, if she finds god she might get 1 week of washing windows at homeless shelter....
