Did you try going to the "System" hardware device manager, then selecting the Display or Video and change it there?

If the system is not even showing the "Change Driver" button, then something is seriously wrong with Windows as that is part of the display panel for the device.

I don't know if you have a "guru" or someone who is a PC ace, but at this stage I would beg or bribe someone to help you.

That's what I would do.  The more you thrash about with problems like this the worse it gets!

Last resort, take it to a shop and get them to do it for you. Seriously.

I've no win98 Pc availlable at work ... so no screen shot sorry :(

The point I mark with (1) can have another label I've translated from French.
I've no access to an english computer ... (well I've a korean one near but it won't help :D)

Here we go (grab a beer , lock the wife and the kid in their room and stay calm ;))

1st you will need the drivers for your video card and directX.
• Press the F8 key on your keyboard immediately when Windows displays the Starting Windows [xx] message.
  • Choose Safe Mode(1)
  • When under windows go to control Panel(1) dble click on Add/remove program(1) in the list chose your current video driver and remove it  (if there is an entry concerning your driver otherwise go to next step).
  • Then go to Add/supress hardware (1) click next on 1st page
  • Choose Add/repair(1) ,at this step windows would be searching some new hardware... wait till it complete.
  • Select the 1st entry Add new hardware (1) (the one without icon) on the following page select : no,I'll chose hardware from a list (1)
  • Next page select graphical card(1) then click next.
  • Check the radio buton labelled show all compatible hardware (1)
  • Click on "(Standard display types)" in the left list then select "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)" on the right listbox
  •
REBOOT now you should have a properly installed VGA driver

Re-install your video driver + control panel (be sure to have the correct version for your OS)
Reboot and voila you should have the good version.

    Next re-install DirectX.
    Reboot

All should be cleared now ... let hope ...

Before trying this method wait for a confirmation by Skuzzy please I'm unsure because of potential translation errors.

So BGB it would be good to ask your friend to backup all your data and then reformat an re-install your computer.

I'm pretty confused concerning your trouble ,it's pretty difficult to make a diagnostic and find a cure when not in front of your PC ....

Update vid driver
« Reply #26 on: December 17, 2003, 04:44:36 PM »
You should STRONGLY consider upgrading to XP. MS will NOT be offering support for WIN 98 at the end of this month.

If you can't, then try reformatting. However, as best that I can remember, you go into device mgr. to update the vid drvr.
Download the new driver for the card and REMEMBER where you put it!  Then uninstall the current driver thru Device mgr. and restart.
Then back to DM and open "display adapters". Right click on the card listed and choose " update driver." Then choose "will specify location of....." then "browse"  Enter the location of the setup files for the new driver in the command window.  Hit next, and installation should  start .

It's been a long time, but I think this is how I accomplished this.
You could also do a search and enter the question you want an answer to. I'm sure you'll find the proper method.

Sorry I am chiming in too late to really help here, but ATI drivers and associated software can be very difficult to get rid of and it is always good to remove it completely before moving on.
This link http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/misc/catalystutils.html
Will take you to a page were you can download the Catalyst removal utility and the Smartgart removal utility.

After using the removal tools, reboot your PC and install the latest drivers.

I use Win98, Win2000, WinXP and have no problems with the ATI drivers except they can be a bear to remove  COMPLETELY without the proper tool.
