When I was stationed in Germany I fondly remember the old German vets talking about how they knew the frontal armor on the American planes was tough so they bounced the pintle mount mg rounds off the clouds to penetrate the much weaker top armor on the attack planes. Of course, this tactic only worked on cloudy days, and when it was too cloudy (which gave the best bouncing effect to the rounds) the Americans wouldn't fly because they knew the losses would be horrendous.

It is a wrong statement AFAIK. The correct one is "A single .303 has neglectable chances to kill you in AH".

AH designed the way that even single .303 can destroy plane (for example by killing a pilot). But chances for this are extremely low.
