Do you have bad luck?
« on: January 28, 2004, 07:14:00 AM »
Although I don't believe in "luck" per se, I do believe that there are those who are predisposed to repeated instances of random events gone bad. I am one of those people.

Here is one of the most recent debacles which occured in a period of 24 hours:

The water main at my house breaks. I find the source of the leak, dig seven feet down, and spend all day repairing it. While testing the repair, I discover that the drains in my house are now stopped up. The source of the problem is of course below the foundation, and not a simple fix. I cut the pipe just above the spot where it disappears into the foundation. I spend a few hours with an auger, and finally get it flowing again. Proud of myself for a job well done, I go to bed and awaken the next morning and discover my wife's car has been broken into, and her stereo stolen. They have of course cut the power wires and shorted out the battery which halfway melted under the hood. I remain optimistic, and consider myself lucky that the battery didn't catch on fire and incinerate my wife's car completely. That evening while watching television in bed, a circuit breaker pops and the power goes out in the house. As I get up to investigate the problem, I notice an orange glow around the access door to the attic. I quickly realize that my house on fire. I get the garden hose and have it put out just as the fire department arrives. They inform me that I'm lucky we weren't killed in the fire. Had we been sleeping the entire house would have gone up in flames, and I was lucky that I only have to have my roof replaced.

Since I am used to such things happening to me (Three flat tires in one day from separate causes... The list goes on, believe me), I informed the firemen that I simply cannot die. If I were to expire, the bad luck gods would no longer be able to toy with me :-)

With that sort of luck, Grim would probably win the jackpot and then find the dog had eaten the ticket.

You are alive, and so a potential recipient of good luck

I, for one, wish you lots of it! :)

That's not karma. Karma is the currency of re-birth; commit a bad deed now and in the next life you come back as a toad or a politician. In Hinduism, commit good deeds and gain good karma, and you will reborn in a higher caste.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck or series of mishaps. At least you are ok.

You'll notice that Trouble comes in 3's.

Bad pipe.
Car damaged.
House fire.

So, on the positive side, at least you've resolved the trio of woe!

Not completely true..

Karma will not always wait for the next life.. Whatever energy one puts out into the world, expect it back at anytime..  8)

Doesn't it also call for all things equal or something?

Found this on the net (which I have edited for brevity). What is interesting is that Karma has nothing to do with some utlimate being deciding what is good or evil. It just works off the principle that there are reactions to actions.

Ravs

---------

Karma is a sanskrit term that signifies action or deed. Any physical or mental action is karma. Thinking is mental karma. Karma is the sum total of our acts, both in the present life and in the preceding births.

Karma means not only action, but also the result of an action. The consequence of an action is really not a separate thing. It is a part of the action and cannot be divided from it. The law of karma means the law of causation. Wherever there is a cause, there an effect must be produced.

No link in the chain is unnecessary. This world runs on this fundamental and vital law. This law is inexorable and immutable. This grand law operates everywhere in the physical and mental planes. No phenomenon can escape from the operation of this mighty law and all other laws of nature are subordinate to this fundamental law.

The grand law of causation includes the law of action and reaction, the law of compensation and the law of retribution. All these laws come under one general, all_embracing heading, namely, the doctrine of karma.

God neither punishes the wicked nor rewards the virtuous. It is their own karmas that bring reward and punishment. It is the law of action and reaction that brings the fruits. No one is blamed.

Is it really odd that I had the intention of posting pretty much the same exact statement in this thread upon entrance?

LOL LePaul,

And thanks for the well wishes fellas... I sure do appreciate it.  Don't mistake my posting this for whining though. I am quite used to such episodes, and had hoped it might help someone who also has such "luck" to realize they are not the only one... LOL

The funny thing is, everytime I get hit with a spell of mishaps I inevitably see something that makes me appreciate my life within a very short time. This time, the next day, I saw a woman leading her son (who appeared to be in his 30's) around the hardware store. He appeared to be blind and have severe retardation, but was smiling and laughing. I'm not sure if these emotions were due to his retardation or not, but it reminded me that I really have nothing to complain about. The old phrase "I used to complain about not being able to afford shoes until I saw a man who had no feet" comes to mind...
