Enabling Java in IE 6
« on: December 30, 2003, 07:21:45 AM »
I have WinXP Home sp1 and it came with IE 6.0.2

When I go to web pages that have embedded java apps, they don't run - just get the red "x".

Do I need to download a plugin so I can run java apps inside IE 6?   Or is there a setting somewhere I need to enable?   I thought I remembered enabling a Java virtual machine in my last PC, but it was sooo long ago I can't remember the details....

Thx for your help!

check tools-internet options-advanced ----- scroll down to microsoft vm, ensure that java console and jit compiler is enabled.

Microsoft will not update their vm (due to suit from sun). I think they will drop internal support for it next year......so if you want updates go to the sun website.  The only problem is that some older java apps that I run are having probs with the sun program --- may be the same for you..

Hope this helps

It is no longer included in the winXP cds, due to an agreement with Sun to stop shipping it.

However if you wish the microsoft version it is still available if you know of some kindly helpful person who has it on cd and can post it.

No selection for Microsoft VM or JIT compiler in my IE.   But I think this is what I remembered doing when I had Win 2K.    I downloaded and installed the Java runtime environment from the link above and now that page with the java app works OK.   Thanks all.

Personally I see this as a real bad deal for most computer users.   They may not have easy access to the wealth of PC knowledge like I do with this board.   So, whats a typical user who buys a brand new PC with XP supposed to do?    Never see java applets again in web pages?   That is just silly.    Or would Dell, Gateway, or HP, etc pre-install the Java vm?

Hmm, I've just noticed I'm back to the same problem again - java applets either aren't loading, or they won't run.   I just get the red 'x' in the box where the applet should be.

I had DL's the SUN VM, and my internet options show
"Use Java 2 v1.4.2.2_03 for " is checked.

I had this working once....since then I've downloaded the eclipse platform and have played around with coding some java programs.  They seem to work OK, but could installing a Java IDE have broken a setting in IE?

Confused here.

I have an older laptop wiht XP Home, that runs applets fine, but also shows the Microsoft VM in Internet options.  Is there a dll I can copy from that machine by any chance?

Just an update - I solved the problem, this time by going to the sun site and following the links to download the Microsoft VM and installing that.

I've been having problems with java. I've gone to the line to download the update. But I cann't seem to get it to work. Everytime I try, it just says that it has incountered a problem with my system and stopped downloading. What ticks me off is they don't say what my problem is. I've turned off zone alarm, anti-virus to get it to work, but no joy.

So what now?????
