Right up there at the top of the heap of writers that I admire is James Michener.
He primarily wrote historical novels. You can rely on this man's meticulous research to present history - whether social, geological, archeological, agricultural, linguistical, cultural, chronological, scientific or whatever - exactly the way it was. A real treat to read ... I highly recommend
Chesapeake , Texas and Caribbean off the top of my head... I guarantee all his books are very well worth your time.
