Here ya go Furball.  my AH Namesake, Tom Slack, flew XIIs with 41 Squadron.  He, against regulations, illustrated his logbook with drawings to show what he was doing.

The below is the one showing his reaction to the new Spit XII in March of 43.

Note it's below the hill, just above the grass  and really moving. He looks happy too doesn't he? :)

The Spits reached the mainland allright, but Germany was out of the question more or less until the RAF had established bases in France, and also until the Mk 21 or other specialized type. I have read somewhere that the MK 21 could go London-Berlin with return. Take that with Spitfire nimbleness and speed in the neighbourhood of 450 mph, and 20K in less than 5 mins, holy cow.
Then add 4 Hizookas to it!

The Spit 21 had 11 more gallons of fuel then the Spit XIV with the corresponding minimal increase in range.  It was 10-12 MPH faster then the XIV at all alts.

As far as drop tanks over the mainlaind frank3.  They were doing that from 42 on.  Every flight in the Spit XII pilot logbooks I have, they are carrying at least 30 gallon if not 45 or 90 gallon tanks.  They were ranging fairly deep into France and almost to the border of Germany if they really had to.

Drawing from Tom Slack's logbook with his 'comment' on "This long range tank business".
