Cool new toys
« on: February 04, 2004, 09:54:48 PM »
Hi all,

I was wandering around the web looking for new toys and hit upon this:

http://www.21stcenturytoys.com/products/airplanes.html

HOLY COW!!!
In particular, check out the coming soon row at the bottom.  I was floored by the quality improvement between the 109E at the upper corner and the G-6.  At 1:18 scale, that Avenger must be huge...

Well, there goes by wallet

The G-6 ROCKS !!

Hangin up now are the Air Cav Huey, P38, P51, 109E, Kepfords Corsair and the 4th FG Jug Donnie Boy.

Plans are for the 51 and 109E to be retired to my grandson. The 51 and 109E are early, alittle small, and the quality wasn't up to where it is currently. The G-6, Dora, Spit and prolly the Avenger to be added to the stable. The P40 is iffy.

I'm hopin for a Spit V. And REALLY would like an A-8, A-5 or A-4 instead of the Dora. But I be taken what they give me. Their paint and detail has come along way.

That G-6 ROCKS !!!

Hmm... If I understand that correctly, you receive those planes already asembled and painted, right? However, although the 1/18 scale is very interesting, giving the Bf-109 a wingspan something like 50cm I did not find any "extreme" details on the photos they have on the web, plus the paintjobs look very... odd to say at least.

So I would still prefer to buy a 1/24 scale kit from Trumpeter and do all the detailing and paintjob myself.. It's more fun and you would not prolly end up with bent barrels on the P-47 as they have it on the photos at the 21st Century Toys webpage... ;)

Are you guys sure the pictures of the coming models represent the end product?

Somehow I think that at least the Dora and the G-6 look *too good to be true*.

It's a matter of taste. I've built models for forty years. Models are...small.

Over time the assembling of the wittle tiny parts became a chore instead of fun. My fun was painting and weathering. With the introduction of these models my views changed.

A 27 inch wingspan Jug is just fugging beautiful.  If I cared to, I could redo the paint and weather it to my tastes.  A 26 inch wingspan Corsair is just too cool.  A 34 inch wingspan 38 is HUGE.

Those wittle tiny parts made a wittle tiny plane.

These models have a "presense" that can't be achieved with wittle models. They aren't in little display cases, they are THERE. The Jug's paint is quite well done. It begs to be weathered with chalks and washes.

And Madbird, you take it out of the box, put it together and if the wittle gun barrels are bent ?? You straighten them, the plastic is flexible, not like model airplane parts.

I've seen this one at Wal-Mart for around $50 or so.

It does look impressive at that scale and could be "dressed up" into a presentable model if you really wanted to take the time.  Its cast out of a different kind of plastic than real scale models - its a bit thicker and has more "bounce"; probably to prevent breakage by young hands.

Odd that there aren't any Mustangs, Hellcats, or Corsairs.

I thought they released a Corsair?  Does anyone own the Green Stuka? I loved the detail on that one.
