Couple notes from my experience:

Make sure there is really a reason to pull them, not just cause the Dentist says so. A lot of Dentists are sending their kids through college pulling wisdom teeth for no reason other than the money it generates. (do some research, internet search, read up and find out if/why they should be taken out)

Two, I had mine pulled by an Oral Surgeon, they specialize in this kinda stuff and do it well.

Three, I had general anesthesia, one minute your there, the next minute your done. No problems, no aftereffects for me.

Mine were impacted, with one partially erupted and it was decaying, hence the need for removal.

Afterwards, follow the directions for care. Saltwater rinses, gently rinse the sockets, etc. Best to avoid problems and dry sockets, and dont use a straw until you are healed.

I've got two on the bottom that need to come out at some point...I never grew any on top. Does that mean I ain't very wise?

Had mine pulled under local two at a time.
But they where impacted so yeppers hurt like hell afterwards.

Do yourslef a favor let em knock you out .
No sence in feeling any of it if you dont have to LOL.
And get plenty of good dope for afterwards.

LOL dont listen to the chicken ****s here

If youre lucky it take 1 min to drag it out (in the upperside of mouth) dont even need to be medicaded for that.

lower side can be a little bit more tricky and need medication if they grown into the bone.
but hardly more than 10 minutes.

Go for the local, so you can stare at the dentists' eyes 3 inches from your face as you hear the grinding and cracking. You won't feel a thing, but make SURE they give you a prescription for extra painkillers afterwards. I ran out, and it wasn't fun.

Another thing... when you eat food afterwards bits of it will accumulate in the holes. Get a syringe, warm water, and gently blast out the food that gets stuck in there.

Mine are nearly impacted, and it's hard to tell from the X-ray if there touching or not, there angle is greater then the forward slash mark growing upwards, / , the other two on top arn't as bad and point away from my teeth but need to come out otherwise they will grow and grow...

I trust my dentist and he and she are not gonna send me to an oral surgeon just to send there kids who are already in college to college =).

I had mine removed last spring at 30. Note that most people do it when they are younger, by atleast 12 years! Anyways, my uppers had both partially erupted and had started to decay, hence their need to remove, the lowers were both horizontally impacted completely in the bone, and growing forward pushing the lower teeth, causing excruciating pain. I therefore, said, gas me up, local, and pain killers after. Ohh, and beware of what they say in regards to care, DO IT. I had one dry socket, and man did it hurt like a my nuts were being chewed on by an epileptic having a seizure....

Late tip it seems but...

Move lower jaw to one side when brushing teeth and do opp side, This way you will keep your wisdoms

(Got a right wisdom to comeout next dentist trip, He told me about the jaw trick for em but in my case right ones had it anyways)

Yeah I tried to macho my way through one of those, really stupid. I finally went in and they fixed it in like 5 minutes, no more pain.

Had all 4 taken out in one shot at age 15. Not an experiance I would care to repeat. I had 2 fully impacted on the lower jaw growing straight towards the front of the jaw. The uppers had not erupted and weren't close to geting to the surface either. They had to go very deep for them. I awoke groggy but also in pain. When the general wore off they had to double the pain meds to get any relief. I didn't feel human for 3 days.

I had all 4 taken at once....worst medical experience of my life. Doctor gave me 4 valium...told me to take 3 an hour before my appointment. Went in pretty happy. They shot me up with novacaine and went to town. They were really impacted bad and each had to be drilled, broke into pieces, and pulled out. Hurt like a bastard. Oral surgeon actually had a knee up on the armrest of the chair at one point trying to pry enough to break them into pieces. Went home and spit out pieces of teeth for about a week. Couldn't work for 2 weeks. Surgeon said "don't smoke", but I was too smart for that and did. Got dry socket in both bottom ones. Ended up being on codeine for about 3 weeks. It's been 10 years and I still get pieces of food caught in the little crevices where the **** didn't heal right.

I had heard stories like Raubvogel's above, so when my time came (in 1997) I went straight for the hospital/general anaesthetic option. Some bleeding, but otherwise I felt fine. Had to take a taxi home the next morning because in Britain you're not allowed to drive a car within 24 hours of a general anaesthetic. Could have gone into work the next day, but they had told me to take that day off. So I spent the day at home playing WB.

Hawklore - before you go in, try to listen to "Unfinished Sweet" by Alice Cooper. It's a song about having a tooth extracted. You actually hear the sound of the drill, and then the tooth extraction - including the sounds as the tooth begins to shatter under the strain of the pliers, and the moment it finally gives way and blood fills the socket.

Gawd, I was nearly ill the first time I heard that...

"De Sade's gonna live in my mouth tonight, la-da-da-daaah-da, and the rotten tooth fairy is satisfied - aching to get me, get me, ohhhhh!!!"
