« on: February 11, 2004, 05:22:16 AM »
not saying i like to go into what i call the death turn, but im sure alot of us have been there before, its when you go into a low alttitude turn with a enemy and you just keep turning in a big circle untill finnaly one of you catch eachother or your shot down by an unseen opponent because your too busy trying to stay on someones tail or avoid him from getting on yours...

my question is does anyone have some good tips for avoidibg this situation

  Think ahead, this is really all part of situational awareness, you should have a plan in mind to handle his possible maneuvers when he's still 4k out, if there's too many enemies around you to do that, then stay on the edge of ther furballs while you develop this ability. You'll get better and be able to envision multiple bogeys through your 3d space as you work on it.

Practice consecutive hi and lo yo-yo's try to use this to hold e higher whilst matching your opponents net turn radius..........

At the end of ahigh Yo-Yo (or middle of a low one)you may have angle and speed to dis engage if you wish.

Know that if you enter this phase of combat with the wrong match of AC to AC or even if it looks good and you have a full fuel load to your opponents near empty tank.Then it could be a sad out come.

Always try to stay faster than the other guy. You can always slow down, but its harder to get fast once your slow. Even a few MPH faster than the next could mean a tighter turn when it comes time to open fire. Or it could mean the diff between getting a shot off and not getting a shot off. My simple rule i follow in MA is just always try and stay faster than the other guy. If your not faster, make sure you are higher and have more potential E for a move. Speed= Life 90% of the time... IMO anyways :)

I am admittably an incredible noob, but in a turn fight doesn't the advantage typically go to the slower plane?

Slower == smaller turn radius?

JoeB not necessarily.  If the person in the in the slower aircraft can force a flat scissors fight then yes.  But if the other aircraft can conserve more energy and force a rolling scissors then he/she could infact gain the advantage.  In this the aircraft with more energy could very well gain angles in the helix and get off a shot or disengage.

There isnt much a dead slow plane can do when his opponent has a nice E adv. over him. Spits turn better when slow. But this only holds true till a point where you become so slow, you have little turning capabilities. There is a fine line that you must read through out a fight. That line is your opponent energy status. This should tell you most of what he can and cannot do.  Killing the other guy is really about reacting to your opponent. Whom ever can addapt and adjust faster wins the fight, its as simple as that. So to describe how to fight is nearly imposible. What one should do is to discribe some good tactics to as far as living.

In regards to your "slower=Smaller turn radius?"  Like I said. This is true, but only to the point where one becomes so slow, the plane doesnt want to turn anymore. Its different for every plane. Good comparison would be a P51D Vs Spit9... P51 will out turn the Spit9 at high speeds. Someone who is very good in the 51 can still out turn it at slow speeds, or atleast get angle shots on the spit. But at high speeds the 51 will turn better than a spit. So that theory of the slower plane will turn better isnt always true. My best advise to you would be as I said before. Stay fast. you can always slow down but its alot harder to regain that lost speed.
