How in God's name do you say "Major" (Military) in German?

Umm, I think you mean 'Hauptmann'.  Of course, I've also heard 'Major' (pronounced mayoor).

Whoops!  Yeah, what Gscholz said.  Yet another reason I should never be put in the position of translating german between warring (or on the edge of war) nations.

Of interest, I entered the following into babelfish:

I am the very model of a modern major general.

I translated it from English to German and got this:

Ich bin das Modell eines modernen Hauptgenerals.

I then told it to translate THAT back into english:

I am the model of a modern main general.

Hmm...  so then I typed in:

I am a major in the army.

I translated that to Japanese and got:

私は軍隊の専攻学生で_る。  (japanese, the BBS software can't display it)

I took that and translated it back to english and got:

I am the major student of the troop.

Babelfish is fun.

Chair...don't bother trying to translate a sentance with Babelfish, it knows watermelon about grammer and sentance structure, but it can be funny at times :D
