All I know is that there were 112 people online at 12:00 AM PST last night!  (3 AM on the east coast.)  It was truely amazing to see that many people online so early in the morning.

I'm sure the European and Asian players are really happy, since there are a lot more players online during the off peak US hours.

As for the newbies, we were all newbies to AH at some point.  ;) I always try to help them out when I can.

I somewhat disagree with this. It really depends on the newbie's 'tude. When I was new to flight sims I got the tar beat out of me for months(still do hehe)--lets face it we all did. The vets in the arena told me the learning curve is steep and gettin whacked is part of the learning process. Made sense to me. They weren't overly abusive--actually helpful when I asked what I did wrong. Difference is I prolly wasn't a whiner. Whining is most often gonna bring an ungodly whoopin from all directions! Whining is most definitely a mistake!

It took a while but eventually I became more of a kill-ER than a kill-EE. The guys that can take the beatings and not get discouraged will generally become the better pilots. Those that can't, well--just won't! I was glad to have paid my time under the club. I'm a better pilot today for it.

So is this the 'kinder, gentler' Deja?  Are you softening up?  Oregon politics softening Ewe?  ;)

Actually, some newbies are surprisingly good. have had some fights (vs spits and n1k's admittedly) where my foe has been thoughtful and fought tactically.

I always let them know when they've done a good job. Todays newbies are tomorrow's aces:  Grüenherz is a good example.

As a newbie I've got to say I don't enjoy being shot down, but I also don't expect somebody to throw a fight to let me win. (also, I have to add, I don't see how an enemy can tell I'm a newbie when we are merging)
Someday, hopefully, I'll figure out how to hit something with the lovely machine guns and cannons my planes come equipped with, 'til then I'm just happy that people answer my questions when I'm trying to figure out a particular key command.

I get into a fight in the MA, I fight like hell to kill the enemy any way I can.  I run across a victory that's a tad bit easier than most.  What do I do?

Comment on how easy the newbies are to kill?
Simply move on to the next target?

Its not how you fight against newbies that matters... its how you treat them afterwards that does.

I would also like to add to what Deja said.  It is not the killing of newbies that is wrong.  I try and kill everything I get my sights on.  It is impossible before a fight starts to tell if the 109 you are merging with is a newbie on his first sortie or HB.  What matters is how you treat them afterwords.

I must say though, that with the influx of new people to the game, there seems to be a little bit better attitude overall.  I don't see the "read the FAQ" replies to questions posed in the MA.  I see people who are not trainers take newbies to the TA to help them out with their setups and such.  While there are still the jerks that give newbies a ton of crap, I think the overall attitude is much improved over what we saw even 2-3 weeks ago.

My advice to everyone would be to keep plying the game like you do, but treat the newbies nice.  All you have to do is remember when you started out.  I know I was asking a ton of questions and being a nuisance to a my friend that pointed me in the direction of AH.  If it weren't for people helping, this game would be inaccesable for most players.

Skill levels span a wide spectrum... and quite a few 'newbies' are not novices to flight sims.

Baine wonders how we can tell on the first turn if we're engaged with a newbie... Baine, a lot of us can spot a newbie at the merge by his energy management, and the decision making process that brought him into the merge.. plane type he's flying; engagement style, numbers he's fighting and how he's holding his energy speak volumes about his SA, common sense and flying style.

Vets tend to give you a viscious close merge, refuse to HO; are often backed up by wingmen, never engage a higher adversary and tend to turn into a blur when you do get saddled up.. if you ever get saddled up at all.  :)

When a vanquised newbie asks for guidance he gets help.. from all us vets I think. If a vanquished newbie barks out a wail or whine, he gets ignored... or worse. It's just the way it is.. the way it's always been.. the way it will remain.

Tho I must confess to watching a bunch of bish newbies flying together towards a fight, typing back and forth (in caps) that caught my intrest one evening. I tagged along just for yuks, and at the appropriate time typed:

"Hit enter 3x quickly for cockpit view without canopy bars..."

Saw five cutes about 2 seconds later. Laffed my bellybutton off.

And that won't change either.  :)
The price of Freedom is the willingness to do sudden battle, anywhere, any time and with utter recklessness...

...at home, or abroad.

ROFL. Not bad. Now, after this clear example of your total ignorance and hatred toward newbies you can apply for my club-a-seal squad  :)
