Well if this was posted by 1colo, its only fitting. As I remember, he wasn't one to mince words or shy away from a debate. And that was in game :) But no - I didn't notice the date or who posted it.
The good thing is with enough egg on your face, you can skip breakfast :D

To all those who hate the moderators:

All I have to say is walk into your local Wal-Mart, restaurant or post office and start mouthing off the employees other patrons, in a fashion that everyone in the store can hear.  Try some flaming or better yet start a personal racist attack and see how long you last......

This is nothing to do with free speech and everything to do with running a respectable business.

Ahhh... but when it is something that they don't agree with, then thats the signal to flame them, I see now.  I think its idiotic to flame on BBS PERIOD.  If you don't agree with what someone is saying, have a mature conversation about it.

The people that name call, or make personal attacks on a message board, need to really to lighten up.  Its childish to sit around and call eachother names on a BBS.;)

Shut up lazer never like you think you a jerk you pc of crap, oh wait you said not to flame my bad.

Indeed but what Is more offensive?
Hearing some one swear or seeing typed in text?

And If you play with speakers and you have kids in the room well use your imagination on that one.

In a perfect world we would act like adults and realise that indeed this is but a game and there people playing it that are better thatn you are and they will shoot you down LOL.
It aint a cheat they just got ya and It makes you mad as hell right?

I know It does me.
Hell i have inveted new swear words and some of my squadies have to use headphones because of my swearing.

So poor old HTC is in a rock and a hard place on this one.
If they do nothing people get mad and leave.
If they do too much people get mad and leave.

I reckon he's doing ok with it and we all just need to cool our jets a little bit and remember someones 10 year kid could be watching there dad play.

CrzHrs!

CrzHrs has gone to the big Main Arena in the sky, although I am sure he is having a good laugh knowing his words are still "stirring the pot" so to speak!

One thing I found out during the Memorial Flight for CrzHrs is that even though we are a large community of differing opinions, at heart we can put aside differences and come together.

As quite an accomplished Vulgarian myself, I can say that one thing that would curb the cursing is for the moderator to chide the offender (maybe with blue text) on the main channel for all to see, instead of the private message box.  It's one thing to privately warn players, but maybe a little public embarrassment would help the situation.

I don't think written cursing is quite as bad as violent discussions of race, religion or politics; however, a squadmate reminded me the other day that some folks might not have headsets or are using speakers for that "surround sound" flight sim experience, and it's entirely possible for their children to hear the vile euphemisms that are spoken on vox.

As far as the freedom of speech issue, the Supreme Court has held in case after case that the First Amendment only applies in a public context, NOT in private enterprise.  At my workplace (a large networking company- nay, THE large networking company) you can be handed your pink slip for even mentioning race, religion or politics.  As a native Texan, you KNOW this rubbed me the wrong way at first, but I understand it now.

(if you haven't guessed, I work for a place that makes routers and switches and rhymes with 'nabisco', LOL)

CrzHrs, Rest in Peace bro, and remember those angel wings can take all the G's you can throw at em!

It's not so much a moral issue but a practical issue on HTC's part. IF HTC could monitor and control vulgar language ... not to mention player harrassment and arguments on vox they probably would. Alas ...

  • They have no practical program to automatically censor voice programs as effectively as they do text messages. (Imagine getting a ten minute time-out for saying "shift.")
  • They can't have manual monitors on all of the vox channels or within range of everyone on range channel.
  • If players send in a film of such verbal abuse on vox, then HTC can take action. However the action, if deemed neccesary, would probably be in relation to the degree and type of offense involved and, quite frankly, some players sensibilities are more easily offended than others (even with the possibility of minors being within earshot).
That being the case, I've neither seen nor experienced HTC being overly aggressive in monitoring and censoring players. Sure, it happens, but such instances are easily avoidable and the company has provided the player community with ample warning and reasoning behind the neccesity to maintain a civil atmosphere in a game marketed to the general public (adults and minors alike).

I don't see it changing anytime soon. Of course, if it does, that's up to HT and co. anyhoo. If people get mad and leave because of having been given a text vulgarity warning by a curse-word bot, then it's really not an issue that needs addressing on HTC's part. Perhaps those people could use a break. Some counseling couldn't hurt.
