Request for aircraft: F4U-1A

All I want is the -1A version without the blasted birdcage canopy. It would be nice to have so I can hammer away on a true VF-17 skin as well with the correct markings in theater during the war.

Did they not have some -1's? I know more about VMF-214 because my dad was CO of the real VMA-214 from '85-'87. I have a copy of Frank Waltons book "Once they were Eagles", he was the Intel officer for VMF-214 and there are pictures of the many planes Boyington and others flew. Most were -1a/d's not birdcage, but there were one or two -1's left even as late as the end of '43 early '44. Possibly VF-17 being a Navy squad got priority on new planes and therefore never had the -1? Surely since they got operational aircraft in what, june/july '43 they must have had some -1's.

At any rate, make one for the -1, it will still be worth it.

When they received the F4U the first version they had was the straight -1. After the shakedown cruise of Bunker Hill near Trinidad they were promised twelve F4U-1A's to be ready with the balance ready by the time they sortied for San Diego one month later. Just before they shipped out in Oct '43 they were at a full squadron of 36 F4U-1A's. They were offloaded in Hawaii with their entire -1A for logitics reasons and were active the entire tour with the -1A minus combat losses and hangar queens.

OK that makes sense. As usual the Squids get all the good stuff and the Marines get the hand-me-downs. Some of those -1's they off loaded in Hawaii probably went to 214. :)

I am reading Tom Blackburn's book "The Jolly Roger's" right now and in it he mentions that the first F4U's out of the gate went to the Marine's and VF-12 who was based on a carrier. VF-12 was forced to transition over the the Hellcat once they hit Hawaii and VF-17 was the first really active unit to test the -1 for carrier duty. They were able to use it but because of the oleo bounce and other little quirks (tail hook tips not staying attached to the plane) they found. The Vought field rep made suggestions to Vought that were listened to and applied for the next version the -1A.

Not just any Hawg will do. Specifically the -1A for the canopy and other little improvements.

Nope we were at MCAS El Toro, now closed. Dad was the last CO while they had A4 Skyhawks, the next CO after he had them took them to Yuma for transition to Scarriers, and they are now at the new MCAS Miramar. I have lived in Yuma though, and I dont recommend it. :)

Just an idea of a 1944 F4U-1A with paddle prop and 2250HP.

This is with full 2400 rounds of ammo and 237 gallons of fuel.
