A hard-fought event, as the LW employed it's new 'Gefechtsverband' formation against 8th Air Force B17's and their Mustang escorts.

The 8th reports heavy casualties among the bombers, but the LW Command is shocked to learn that all of the new 'Sturmbock' aircraft were shot down!

LW - points:

5 - B17 destroyed = 100 points
10 - P51 destroyed = 100 points*

Total - 200 Points

*number is approximate

USAAF - points:

10 - 190A8 destroyed = 150 points*
6 - 109G10 destroyed = 60 points*

Total - 210 points

Result: Draw - with slight edge to the USAAF.

Thanks to everyone who participated, we had about 50 people turn out, and it was a blast to watch.

That was a blast.  Thanks to all who organized it and participated.

There were no points for bombing but FYI of 9 B-17G's sortied, only 6 made it to the target, and only 5 dropped on target.  Dinger dropped on uhhhh a secondary target.

We lost one more bomber on the way home and the remaining four landed safely.  However, my aircraft overshot the runway due to battle damage and I think it would have been a write-off in real life.

You gotta love the AH damage model.  Along with a dead engine and a fuel leak, I had one aileron and one flap gone.  So when I dropped the one flap I lost lateral control quicker than you can say "lawndart".  I cranked the flap back up and regained control, but I was too low to go around (airfield surrounded by hills) and going too fast for comfort.  So I plopped it down and went rolling past the end of the runway with my brakes smoking.

Special thanks to Hangtime for commanding the escort, MrPluto for manning my guns, and Joness for drawing up the mission plan.

<S!>

This was the BEST event I've ever been in!              Can't stop smiling!

I flew as the 109 lead, our mission was to tie the escorts down as the 190s did their job.  Here's the results as far as I know.  Pilots, please fill in any info you have.

109 G-10 Staffel - Results by Pilot

Schwarm #1

Camo, 5 kills (ammo, Kaitsu, DRILL, bluedog (B17), Hangtime).  Didn't take a ping, RTB A27.
Jarski, no kills. KIA, augered.
Janjan, 2 kills, RTB A27.
Nash, 2 kills, RTB A27.
Nibbio, 1 kill, RTB A27.

Schwarm #2

Staga, 1 kill, shot down by Hangtime.
Habicht, no kills, shot down.
Tigger, 2 kills, shot down by Hangtime.
Tuomio, no kills, KIA.

Schwarm #3

Wotan, no kills, shot down.
BigJoe, <edit>1 kill, KIA, collided with another P51.</edit>
Skyman, no kills, KIA.
Wire, no kills, KIA.
Naso, no kills, <edit>compressed, bailed out.</edit>

Summary - 109s

14 kills (13 P51's, 1 B17)
10 losses

The fight was clearly divided into two engagements. During the first, Schwarm #3 was shot down, as well as half of Schwarm #2. Still we managed to down all P51's we engaged. Five of them stayed with the B17's, which saved their lives - for the time being.

When there were no more P51s left, the remaining 6 109s headed for refuel.  Camo, Janjan and Nibbio landed at 27 - Nash, Staga and Tigger at 28.  Most of the 190s were dead by now I believe, maybe 2 left?  The allies bombed A32 during this time without axis opposition.

We took off again and proceeded to hit the enemy force, who was RTBing NW over 27.  The 3 109s from 28 engaged a bit too soon and got caught by Hangtime, who shot 2 of them down.  I brought my schwarm to the scene, and we shot the remaining P51s down. I also de-winged one straggling B17.

The rest of the B17's ran North and the remaining 109s RTB'd to A27: Camo, Janjan, Nash, Nibbio.

The lead Schwarm achieved 10 victories for the loss of one pilot.  Well done! Unfortunately most of the 109s and all the 190s were shot down, so I can't really say we were completely succesful.  But we did our best and managed to give the allies a good run for their money!

A BIG thanks to Vadr who set this magnificent scenario, by far the most fun event I've ever been in!

<S> to all Axis and Allied pilots for making this happen!  See you next time!

First of all I'm not whinning    But I did knock the tail off one P51 and saw him go down and then rammed a second.  But because I died before first bailed or hit the deck I never got the kill    oh well such is life.

Btw the second one would warp ahead then back just enough for me to misjudge the distance and I went KaBOOM.  Not the way I really wanted to end it, so I left in disgust at my inability to make a clean kill.  Ok maybe that was a itty bitty whine, sorry.

Cyas next time had a blast while it lasted!

Well that's a bummer, but the HTC scoring buffer don't mean squat!  You knocked down a P-51 and your side got points for it!  Ain't no "I" in "team"!

hehe.
I'd just add that I don't think there was a single B17 that rtbd without serious damage.  The best image was when a 190 streaked through our formation on the first pass and just took off parts as he went; 4 planes were smoking afterwards.  I was missing half a vator, a rudder, and a flap, and I was considered pretty healthy.

There was one sturmbock who could have RTBd, but he saddled up sanj's 6 after general RTB was called.  A couple swift barrel rolls at nearly 400 ias and I was on his six; our two gunners just chewed that goat to pieces.

A nail biter.. fer sure.

Allies were forced by ROE to stay within dot vis of the buffs.. that kinda tied our hands.

My intent was to send Ammo with the majority of the escorts way out on flank to engage and thin out the 109's.. and the six ponies in my group would stay with the buffs for close escort and defense against the 190's.

As it worked out; Ammos group did in fact wind up blunting the main 109 thrust.. unfortunately.. several went for the buffs and we were not in a position to stop them; being focused on the incomming 190 attack. The 190's literally warped from d8 to actually in the buff group (damndest thing.. several others saw that mad warp too) in about about 3 seconds, after that first 190 pass the close escorts were able to drive them down.. all but one close escort survived, and we lost 2 b17's in the inital furious engagement. Most of the 190's perished here from the b17's defensive guns.. a good tight box.

Trailing smoke; the b17's and the close escort group droned on towards the target.. those escorts that attempted to continue engaging the LW after they were no longer a threat to the buffs were picked off piecemeal.

The target was bombed succesfully; and we worked the escorts well out in front and to the side of the buffs for the ride back, just inside dot range.. protecting the flank. An initail group of three LW.. 2 109's and a 190 were engaged by 3 of us on the flank; the 109's were destroyed and we lost 2 more escorts here to compression rather than enemy fire.

Our high alt talent in the pony is severly lacking. < > All told; almost half the escort group succumbed to compression from diving after low LW.. something to be avoided in the future.

About this time; I had contact reports from the buffs; (4 more hi 109's)  At this point the escorts are outnumbered and for the most part lower than the buffs.. That next to last schwarm had fulfilled the role of Torpedo 8. (pulled the defenders low)

Our straggler b17 was overwhelmed by attackers, the last escorts were were decimated by the higer alt and e state 109's.. they decisively ended the escort role at that point.

A big crisp <S!> to the LW; Camo; u gents did a magnificent job!

SALUTE! All who flew.. A good time was had by all. As such, for both teams; Mission Accomplished!

LOL, if the attrition rates would be this high IRL, there sure as heck would be no wars at all!

Two sides to every coin. You should have heard me curse when you first shot Staga down and then Tigger! Grrr...     I'm glad their sacrifice wasn't in vain.

BTW i am not KIA, i manage to return to base, by foot.

Great scenario, and what a blast to see the carpet bombing from the tower.

Dinger, I couldnt believe you were able to roll that -17 with all the damage you had  hehe
btw I had no damage at all (heard a few pings) and Raider had none either, unfortunately he suffered premature bail out   so he counted as a kill for the LW

Great fun! I think I will stick next to FunkedUp when flying in Buffs doing these events , he seems to be a lead magnet
