PC takes longer to boot
« on: December 18, 2003, 10:03:21 AM »
OK, someone tell me what to look at to try and diagnose this problem.

Suddenly last week, my PC started taking 30 seconds longer than usual to start the boot process.  I am not talking about starting windows, I am talking about sending any kind of video signal to the monitor.

I turn on the monitor, and then fire up the PC.  The monitor says "no signal" for about 30 seconds before the bios/boot sequence appears.  I can not hear any strange noises like the HD is going bad or anything.  And once the PC does boot, I have no problems at all.

How old is the computer?

Do you hear the single beep from the mobo after POST or do you hear nothing at all for the 30 seconds until you see something on the screen?

Also what is the first thing you see? Do you see the POST screen where the Mobo is counting RAM and displaying the CPU info?

It's about 2 years old.  It's an Asusv7S333 MB.

The boot sequence is normal, except that it doesn't happen until about 30 seconds after I power it on.  When I first power it on, no beep and the monitor says "No signal".  Then 30 seconds later I get the beep and the POST screen and the RAM count.

First thing I would do is time it to see if it takes exactly the same amount of time each time. This will hopefully see if the problem is random or not. If it does take the same amount of time I would starts swapping out components  starting with the PSU.

The video card is initialized before the post screen can come up.

It's odd because it booted fine twice yesterday, but today it did it again.  I timed it at about 25 seconds so I will keep and eye on it.

Could it be related to temperature?  It's not freezing in my house, but I do keep the temp lower than normal in the winter.  Yesterday when it booted fine the outside temp here was in the 50s.

I really doubt it has much to do with the temp.

I would open up the case and make sure everything is seated correctly. Also if possible swap a different video card in to see if that might be the cause.

Video card was the problem.  Replaced it and it stopped happening.  Thanks all.  :aok
