Odd computer problem
« on: March 05, 2004, 08:31:03 PM »
My wife just came over and told me her computer wasn't working.  I went to check it out and sure enough, it had locked up.  I reset it and it came back up to the windows prompt, but locked up again when I tried to access windows explorer.  I rebooted, and it came up to the windows prompt then rebooted on it's own.

I did the following...

Checked that all the memory was properly seated
Checked that all of the fans were spinning properly
Looked for any signs of scorching or smoke

But the damn thing would not stay on.  Then it occured to me...

I was thinking about making this a "guess the problem" post, but figured it wouldn't be fair given that I'd actually have to give the answer away...

We have a utility light in the room that is floresent.  It flickers occasionally in is something of a neusance.  I asked her to unplug the light.  Problem seems to be solved.  I have to say... this is something that never would have occured to me 10 years ago... but doing installs on all sorts of electrical equipment has significantly changed my lattitude.

The gremlins living in the computer really HATED the flickering flourescent light and decided it was time to fight back.  They did so by messing with your wife's computer until you removed the light.

MiniD, get over to the phone and call your friendly neighborhood Electrician ASAP.

It is highly likely that the flourescent light was exhibiting a symptom of a deeper problem.

Is the outlet for the utility plug on the same circuit as the outlet for the computer?

How old is the house and when was the wiring last inspected (or updated)?

Seriously Bud, dig a little deeper just to be sure. House fires are damned inconvenient.

Cheers,

The ballast on a florescent is a mighty thing.  Once they start to go... they go... and it's not a one way streak.

That is interesting MiniD.  I've never seen a lamp ballast interfere with a computer to the point of causing a crash, but I can tell you they can be troublesome when trying to design and test high gain audio amplifier circuits and optical communication links (because florescent lamps flash 120 times a second when feed from a 60 Hz source).

"Old" design florescent lamp ballasts generate a fairly large EMF (electromagnetic field) around themselves.  A computer case with insufficient shielding (like a computer case with a large window in it) or a computer which has an ungrounded powersupply/case (which could happen in an older house with only 2 wire outlets, using a grounded to ungrounded outlet adapter, improperly grounded outlet, etc) could be subject to interference from the ballast which could cause data corruption.  In this case, a high impedance open drain/collector signaling bus could potentially be subject to induced voltages.  An example of this is the IDE bus.  With a very long IDE cable it might be possible for a lamp ballast nearby to induce an accidental '0', which could cause a system to crash.

Didn't the flourescent lights flicker in The Excorcist?

Just asking

I hate reading threads like this.

They remind me of how much I really don't know.
