My AH Tryout
« on: May 06, 2002, 01:59:00 PM »
Hi folks,

Like many of you, I'm a current WB player (since 97/early 2.0) looking to see if I can expand my horizons or find something possibly better.  I signed up for the 2 week trial and have a had a pretty good time.  the graphics aren't as good as WBIII, and the gunnery model isn't the same, but I love the fact that the arenas are so full and the options in terms of a/c, terrain, vehicles, etc etc.  Seeing that the developers are old WB guys like PYRO etc also brings back many a fond memory.

Anyway, the real clincher in all this for me is the rolling plane set.  In my opinion, this is an absolute necessity.  It makes the game more interesting on a much deeper level.  My question -  is AH EVER going to head in that direction?   A good rps (and the wwII arena from 2.77) are just so much more fun.

Strider 417 (somebody stole my hanlde in AH!!!  :( )

Hiya Stryder,
I think of AH and its content as a flexible, breathing animal that neither commits to one sort of vision nor changes every day to appeal to anothers opinion (does that make sense?)

The Perk plane set was another alternative to the RPS which some perceived as 'Chastising the plane set', (meaning, you only get to fly your Pony for 10 days out of the month, etc. etc.)
Whether that is successful or not is for another thread.

Personally, I don't think RPS is strictly "out" for future implementation, but maybe a modifed version of it, or alternate arenas offering such.

Anyway, welcome to AH, where your input is put into the game. ;)

Heya Strider,

I think htc decided to avoid to RPS this time around. Not sure their reasons why, but I dont care either way. I enjoy full arenas too :)

As for graphic quality I think a lot of people look at the most popular planes (p51, 109g10, b17) from the beta release and say 'oh, the planes aren't as nice'

some of these new models sure do look purty though :)

I hope you stick around even with the perk system :)

Strider, the Combat Theater (CT) has a different historical planeset every week.  Setups are usually something like a mix of WB2 WW2 Arena and WB2 HA.  Obviously the vast majority of players prefer the freedom of the MA planeset, but there are a sizable number of CT fans.  I see 30-60 guys in there usually when I log in.  Vote with your feet.  :)

I joined up with ICI back in 97.  Came to AH in Sep99 and havent looked back (expect to to try WB3 several months ago).

Enjoy your stay in AH.  If you stick around, you will see that HTC is so much better than iEN.  That goes for the product as well.

I have problems with the menu interface as well.  I find it sort of clunky, but I guess thats a matter of getting used to it more than anything.

I'll try it out for another few weeks and reevaluate then :)  BTW, the S3's are another thing I would miss...

Check out the Tour of Duty, Stryder for weekly Scenarios.  As a matter of fact, if you'd like, you can fly as a guest for MAG-33 this Friday night to "get a taste"...  ripsnort60@yahoo.com if your interested (read up under EVENTS/TOD at the HTC website: http://events.hitechcreations.com )

Also, don't forget to disable the GUI when walking from tower to aircraft (Alotta folks complain about that feature in WB's, but they fail to realize that they can control the interface!  Setup!)

We have the TOD series which is based on the S3 concept and is a lot of fun.  There are two series, Friday and Saturday, and they usually run 3 weeks out of 4.  Usually 150+ players for Fridays and 50-75 for Saturdays.  If you want to fly just let me know and we'll add you as a guest.  funkedup@raf303.org

stridr.. I think funked summed it up.  You can have pretty much what you want and even influence what goes on in the arena by going to the CT.   The players have control and are pretty open to suggestions.   It is all "historical" but with some substitutions and what if scenarios.    They could use more players so you would be welcome.

I believe that a main arena best serves the vast majority by offering the most parity and choice possible.   I believe that the next idea for the main will have to be something different than all the stale old ideas like a RPS that alienates so many people.

Graphic User Interface I believe...set it to 0 and you won't have to do that ol' "Walk to the hangar, Walk to the aircraft" stuff.

Don't forget, you can save your head views in the cockpits of each plane.  Very important for maintaining SA.

Getting used to the UI for any new software is always a challenge.  Take some time to run through all the various setup and configuration options.
Nice thing about the clipboard approach is the ability to make changes on the fly, as it were.

Get in a plane, fly it, you don't like the way your stick feels, adjust it and not have to land to try it out.

There are a lot of people that will help you out if you need it.  Drex has posted he would be willing to help any WB guy with the various flight timing differences between WB and AH.  Might be worth a shot.

As the ISP for all arenas, but the MA, I would be curious to know how your connects are to the CT/SEA arenas.

Above all,...have fun and if there is anything we can do to help, let us know.
