Amazing people.
« on: March 12, 2004, 01:06:10 AM »
im watching this show on discovery channel called "Beyond Human" or somethin to that effect, anyways they take people that can do some crazy stuff and test em to see if they are any different or if its fake.

First one was some chick that could free dive(1 breath of air) down to 400ft using some weight to drop her down, but she has to swim up using her own power, thats somethin to see, crazy stuff, she could also hold her breath for 4:20.

Then they had this guy that could do math faster then anyone and anything, they gave him random equations and he dished it out faster then they could type it on the calculator, example, they gave him 87 x 87 x 87 = 600,000 somethin they gave him the 600,000 somethin part and asked him what number by 3 it was, before i even knew what was goin on he says 87! truely amazing!

The last guy bungee jumpd from a 200 somethin ft bridge with some friends, the cable snapped and they hit goin 80mph, the did a test to see if water is really harder or as hard as cement from 200 ft and they found that water is in fact not near as hard a cement,

neways all those people survived the fall and fully recoverd, they dropped 2 fake bodys( made out of stuff the same composition of a body and with bones) and dropped 1 on water and 1 on land, both would have died.

they found that at the angle the rope broke, it sent them at a 45 degree angle into the water, they were wearing life vests also, those 2 things are what saved them, had the rope broken 1 sec sooner they would have spaltted flat into the water and broke up into pieces, had it from much later they would got flung into rocks and died, amazing stuff, what a lucky guy.

The human body is truely amazing!

I've seen this girl on TV. Her husband is a chamoin free diver as well. They don't swim up on their own power, they use auto-inflating balloons to assist. Tragically, during a record setting dive, the balloon designed to provide bouyancy for her ascent failed, and she died. The husband was given much of the blame. I saw a subsequent interview with him on HBO Real Sports. Heartbreaking.

"Free diving is dangerous, and in some cases deadly sport. There are about 5,000 free divers around the world, and an estimated 100 die each year. "

I would not call that a sport.  I would call it Russian Roulette.

Was this the one in Florida?  A group of nutcases did a stunt off the Sunshine Skyway bridge near me a couple of years ago.

They were daredevils/bartenders from Ft. Lauderdale who did an unauthorized group bungee jump from a span of the bridge using a home-made apparatus jury-rigged to accomodate 4 or 5 people (one of them a woman).  What they failed to allow for was basic physics.  Instead of going straight down like normal bungee jumping, they swung down like a pendulum, and as they reached the bottom the additional g-stresses caused the cable to break and they flew off at an angle to the water, skipping across it briefly before sinking.  I believe the woman ended up with a broken neck.

They were arrested on various charges, such as causing a public disturbance and obstructing traffic.

I can't remember if the woman was able to walk afterwards, but I do know that she suffered some paralysis.

Capt. pork, i dont think this was that girl, this was just on tv last night and it was a pretty recent thing, btw she did come up on her own power, only went down with a weight.

Gofaster, yea that sounds exactly like the one, and yes i think she broke her neck but all recoverd fully. Crazy bastages! From the way the dummies lookd, them people would all be oil slicks in the sea if their bungee hadnt broke at an angle.

Yeah, one of the local stations did a "Investigative Report" about it.  The guy that organized the jump had used cable rated for a maximum of weight of the people, but what he hadn't accounted for was the increased g's (I want to say nearly triple normal weight but I could be wrong).  If they had gone straight down like a typical bungee jump, they'd all be dead or close to it.

I think their little group disbanded after that.  The leader may still be out there like an adrenaline junkie but I know at least two members called it quits.

Tests done on cadavers proved that the human body was highly resistant to relatively high-speed impacts..particularly the skull.

At slow speed impacts however, the bodies fared very poorly.

The had a special on this on discovery health a while back. They put cadavers on its back and dropped objects at clocked speeds that would impact the temple. The slow things would transmit the impact force into the brain, causing damage and many times, the skull cracked.

The fast clocked objects literally bounced off the skull with no damage other than the skin in the temple being cut to show the bone.

Really amazing stuff. They explained it as being something to do with the elasticity of the organic tissue.
