What is the best plane for this duty?

Whats the best plane for intercepting heavy fighters inbound to a friendly carrier?

Doesn't have to be Navy, as usually a friendly base isnt more than 50 miles away.  F4U-4 has been my plane of choice, but this plane actually doesn't climb that well to justify putting 60 perks on the line.

I'm thinking 190D9 or P51D

For cap over CV the F4U-1C is great.

Bad climb tho.  great firepower for anything that attempts to kill cv.
I am not ashamed to confess that I am ignorant of what I do not know.

If only we had a Seafire L III.......  it would be the perfect answer.

F4U-1c has great guns, but it cant run down many planes.  Especially when it has to climb to intercept.

F4U-4 is probably the best Corsairs fighter in Aces High and also F4U-1C is great plane to kill GV, Vulch, and more.

Obviously i would tell the F6F-5 Hellcat! (being my fav. plane and all)
but in another sense i will also go with the F4U-1 though not the greatest views....it's still a great fighter plane and climbs half decently

D9 to catch and kill those dive bombing tards

take off a sector away and just hover over a CV... we JBs have been know to do that many of times. just a bunch of 190-d9's lying in wait... Muhahahhaha

with a proper angle nothing will run away from you except maybe a tempest or 262. a dora can even catch a jug in most dives.
I don't know what to put here yet.

P47 is actually a big piece of chit.  Accelerates worse than most medium bombers and turns about the same.

Yeah, cv defense can sometimes be very fun.

what dadelos said, with the 30mm and gondolas.  also consider the a8 with the 30's too, but it won't be able to intercept the buffs as quickly because it climbs poorly compared to the g10's excellent climb rate, but a8 is a bit more durable.

An effective, active CAP duty requires good guesses and estimates for enemy activity. It's literally a Combat Air Patrol.

Floating around a CV, seeing an enemy plane, and going climbing into him to catch him as he soars into the CV is largely ineffective - at least, if there is a determined CV hunter who knows how to hit the ships with great accuracy and get out alive, then that kind of CV defense will not work.

In that aspect, altitude is something that should be prepared well before any enemy approaches the CV. In that sense, climbing ability is not much of a concern for CV CAP.

Personally, for dedicated patrol duties, something with a long flight time is preferable - the F4U-1 with DTs naturally become a good choice for me.

As long as you've guessed the enemy's intentions, a F4U-1 w/DTs on a patrol duty is pretty much ideal for running down a plane, intercepting him out of the sky, and then resuming the patrol, whereas any other CV planes are usually pressed to a few such interceptions attempts, and then have to rtb because there isn't enough fuel to climb back up again and wait for more enemies.
