Skin Edits Not Showing
« on: March 21, 2004, 09:15:34 PM »
Since about beta 17, I've had a Hell of a time getting changes to my skins to show up in the game.  The old version keeps appearing in the game, despite the fact that the old version of the skin files is dead and gone, overwritten by the new version.

I can only assume that somehow the old version is lodged in the game's mind, or my RAM, VM, or in my vidcard's RAM.  But no matter how many other planes I click to load their skins, and no matter how long I fly offline, nor whether I exit AH2 completely for hours, nor whatever I do in the meantime, the old version of the skins still shows up.  That is, until I reboot or shut down and restart.

I figure this is due to the changes HTC made to caching in an attempt to get around the skin-loading stutters.  Anybody got a workaround for this?  How do you get the old skin out of memory at will, so you can see changes to the skin you're working on?  Short of a reboot, that is :)

Go into you AHII folder and open the Cache folder.

Delete the folder here with the same name as the plane/gv you are trying to change.

Next time you run AHII the newer version of the skin will show.

Thanks.  I take it this is something I'll have to do each time I make a revision, eh?  Oh well, it's still less of a pain than having to build a map around the skin in AH1 :)

Yep :)

But in AH1 you could make people use your skin, like it or not! lol

I can understand caching stock skins and downloaded skins.  But why do it for the .bmp versions?  It's not like other players have to worry about them yet.

If I had to guess...

I think it's because everything they cache improves frame rates and stutter, online or off. Not to mention load times.

Again, just my guess :)
