Need a temp utiltiy
« on: March 24, 2004, 11:02:14 PM »
My system has been crashing lately not sure why but it might be getting to hot.  I have not had this problem with this system before, it is about 3 years old.

AMD Athlon 2000 1.67 GHz
Soyo SY-K7u Dragon Plus mb
GF 4 Ti 4600
512 Ram

All the fans seem to be working and I had the case apart a few weeks ago and it looked clean.  If the vid card is going bad would this cause the system to crash?

Thanks in advance.

You leave a lot unsaid. Are you running XP? ME? 98? It sounds more related to an unstable system. Try running the usual remedies such as Norton WinDoctor, DiskDoctor. Run Windows Defrag once a week. If you're still having problems try running CKDSK. Using Windows Explorer, highlite your HD in the left pane. Right click and then select Properties > Tool tab > run both "error checking" and "defrag"

Hope that helps.

If you have not already done so, then check the video card fan is working.
The GF cards are also known for bad contact between the heat  sink and the gpu, i had one that was ok for a year then started locking up rebooting etc.
I used that as an exscuse to get a radeon but when i checked the GF heatsink and refitted it with AS3 it ran fine again.

This is a little tricky to set up, but uit's good. I had to install better cooling on my PC. If you are getting complete hard lockups with no way out but reboot, it may well be temp.

Good luck:aok

Ygsmilo I had a problem with my TI 4600 in the past causing just such issues.  Most of the time you wouldn't see any issues while just using your normal desktop.  But once you stepped into any game it'd go crazy.

Check your fan on your video card when it does the crash.  Preferably before it's been allowed to fully reboot.  My fan was working for the most part then would start to die.  When I started seeing the errors I popped my case and watched and sure enough the fan was locking up and not moving.  If your dump is almost like clock work then this might be it.

If you have multiple memory sticks try taking all but one out and test the system that way for awhile.  Try this until you isolate a stick or ensure it's not the memory causing the crash.

latest version of motherboard monitor is not nearly as combersome as previous versions.....download it......update it......if your motherboard is listed select it and it automatically configures itself.  Whereas previous version you had to fiddle with the sensors to see which one did what.......royal pain in the arse this version is easy as pie.
