Bare minimum for AH2
« on: April 01, 2004, 08:05:11 PM »
Due to the fact that my comp can't handle the graphics of AH2, I decided to get a new comp.  The trick is that I want only the bare minimum needed to run AH2.  My old computer is just fine for the work that I need it for and I still plan to use it as my everyday computer.  The new one will be for gaming only.  I just would like to know what's needed on this new computer for gaming and how much it would cost.  Keep in mind that this is for gaming only, so I really don't need the extras that seem to cost so much.  A link to where I could find some help on this matter would be appreciated also.

I'm not sure what your looking for.  Most people will tell you that you need all those expensive extras for a game PC.  I don't think you need to buy the bleeding edge stuff to play.  I suggest looking at the prices and processor speeds.  There will be a big price drop from new today PCs and the PCs that were new 6 months ago.  Get the fastest one in your price range.

I am guessing you are looking for inexpensive complete PC.  If so, Compter Geeks is a good place to start.  Note that much of their computers are refurbished, but they do have some new so read close.

I know someone who buys stuff from Geeks quite a bit and has been happy with the deals and the service.

I don't know what the minimum system is, but I would go for something around 2.5G, or an AMD 2500+ or better.  This should be more then minimum, but it should be fast enough to last you a few years before you need another upgrade.

Problem is, as above says, you actually need a better machine for gaming than for work.

Bare minimum today would be 3gig processor, AT LEAST 512 Ram pref 1 gig, at least a Geforce 5700 Ultra or Ati 9600XT (not SE!!).

Good news is that could  be had if careful for around £500 ($I'm not sure). The main tthing to try and do (Tricky right now) is get a motherboard which will accept upgraded graphics and processor later.

For work  currently use a celeron 800, 512Mb RAM 64Mb GF 5200. Its great for work and will play Counterstrike or Age Of Empires Multiplayer. Just!  Actually it plays Halo multiplayer with everything turned right down.

Games machine is an XP2000+ 1Gig Ram  Rad 9800 Pro. (all on the verge of upgrade city, certainly in the next year or two)

See what I mean?

Why do you need to "update"...you can get a AMD 2600+ on a ECS MB from Fry's electronics for ~$70. I'm running a ti-4200 card in AH2 just fine...and zbat just posted a 210 fps framerate with same card http://www.superwarehouse.com/TI4200-TD8X64_8XAGP_64MB_DUAL_VGA_TVOUT_VID_IN

I'm sure others would suggest other decent cards as well...

S0...

Case                        ~$40
MB/CPU                    ~$70
512 3200 DDR          ~$80
40 gig 7200 rpm HD ~$90
generic sound card  ~$25
40 watt sound sys   ~$40
mouse/keyboard      ~$25
video card                ~$150
17" CTR                    ~$120
windows XP              ~$ 90
