Steve - consider starting a Yahoo! email account. I have several, but you can still use an email client like Outlook to retrieve mail off the POP3 mail server. Yahoo has a facility called SpamGuard, and automatically gets rid of a lot of spam. That would happen before your email client even saw it. In addition, you can create up to 15 filters. I have one I created which puts any email containing the word "Africa" into a "possible junk" folder - gets rid of all those bank scams from Nigeria. You could create a filter - anything containing "Beet1e" could be directed to a "Effeminate Poofter" folder. Filtering mail is an asynchronous process - you don't have to wait while your email client downloads a big message only to place it in the Deleted Items folder.
Get a firewall like Zone Alarm Pro or, better still get PC-Cillin from
http://www.pccillin.com which is a combined virus checker and personal firewall.
I have done all the above and now I hardly get any spam at all. Plus I'm fully protected against viruses and hacking attempts!
