I was wondering how the Yak9U model stacked up against other aircraft in flat turn rate?

in Air Warrior it was said that the Yak-9 could come in from your 2 and whip around really fast on your 6 and get a few shots off, but lost energy so fast after that as to be more or less helpless if the first pass didn't work

Almost the same as standart Yak-9.

360 degree time at 1km alt:
Yak-9 (standart) - 17-18 sec.
Yak-9T - 18-19 sec.
Yak-9D - 20 sec.
Yak-9U (VK-105PF2) - 19,5 sec.
Yak-9U (VK107 at 3200 rpm) - 18,5 sec.
Yak-9U (production plane) - 20-21,7 sec.

Turns very well IMO, can keep up with all but the best turners in flat turn rate. And those it can't turn with it can more then easily outrun and outaccelerate.

Would stay away from turning with Zekes, Spit, nikis, F2M, F4F, but all others will be easy pickins or a good match.

Guns have a tremendous knock out power in close in my experience atleast, have often knocked the whole tail off a fighter with a single snapshot, something that I rarely see happen in that lightly armed planes.

Some will tell you that I was reasonably successful in a YAK in AW:D

and what Rasker says is true. cept for the part of being helpless.
Cept for Alt monkees it was anything but helpless
I would use that E loss to my advantage.
Slow planes still make tighter turns then fast ones and I would use that slowness with a combination of low yoyos to get back into a position to deliver a fatal blow to anyone dumb enough to try to out turn me.
end result

Seems like the YAK-9's Flight Models here in AH are a little "Too Generous" from the facts I have read in different aircraft refrences. Everything I ever read said the aircrafts performance really fell off above 15K because of the lack of a supercharger.

The reason I say this is because of a dogfight with Grits in the CT on the previous Kurland map. The fight started at 20K when he managed to get on the tail of my ME-109G-10 with his YAK. I started in a very slow upward spiral climb to open the range. After several turns and at an altitude of 25K I was surprised as HELL to see him gaining on me like I was setting still and was forced to dive to avoid him. Eventually he hit my rudder and I was done.

It was my opinion that about none of the YAK's could match the ME-109G-10 up high. Even Grits commented he couldn't believe he had caught up to me.

I did some tests with the YAK-9U and here is what I came up with.

YAK-9U   Full Ammo, 50% Fuel

ALTITUDE...........INDICATED SPEED..........ACTUAL SPEED
10K.......................... .....330 mph.......................... ..390 mph
15K.......................... .....320 mph.......................... ..410 mph
20K.......................... .....290 mph.......................... ..405 mph
25K.......................... .....265 mph.......................... ..400 mph
30K.......................... .....230 mph.......................... ..380 mph
35K.......................... .....200 mph.......................... ..350 mph

While the Indicated Speeds seem right look at the "Actual" Speeds. Seems WAY too generous at Altitude IMO from what I have read. NO Yak should be that fast at alt. Those numbers are up with the supercharged 109's!

Have my doubts on the LA's as well but have to do more research into them. Wish I knew where AH got their figures on these flight models.

Speed chart.

Nonsense. All Yak-9s has superchargers. As for Yak-9U - it has nice middle altitude engine. Not low one as VK-105 engined Yaks.

Thanks for all the info. Does anyone have yak films? For the past 3 months I've been flying it pretty non stop with some success. Being able to see how others fly it might be helpful:)
