A few weeks back I went to a lecture given by a test pilot who flies WW2 planes, mainly in displays. In the lecture he compares the flight characteristics of various aircraft.

Subjects covered were: Ground Handling, Take-off, General Handling Qualities, High Power accellerated stalling, Low Speed Power Handling, Engine Handling and Landing.

wow thanks! I'm still in the section on ground handling:

[after discussing the Spit's tendency to lift the tail while taxiing during high winds, and the use of people sitting on the tailplane to counter this tendency:]

During WWII a pilot actually took off with a WAAF still sitting on the tail! He thought that the aircraft was handling somewhat strangely so landed immediately - still with a somewhat shaken young lady adversely affecting his c. g. position.

Great notes, Ravs! Seems like a good read to me.

Just a quick note: It doesn't make a big difference if you pack the pdf into a zip file - it's almost as well compressed without the zip wrapping.

Ignore the above if you got the notes already wrapped into a zip...

Cheers Wasq / Rasker. I had to put it in a zip as I uploaded the pdf into Saw's hanger, which only takes specific file types, and I don't think that .pdf is one of them.

I am in touch with David Southwood by email, so if you have any questions you would like to ask I'd be happy to pass them onto him.

Great stuff Ravs!

I have one question: Has Southwood flown any "combat maneuvering" in the planes, and if he has, what does he feel are the strengths and weaknesses of each plane, from the pilot perspective?

I will pass on your question, Camo, but I expect the answer is that he has only flown the planes to the limits he sets out in the paper. Guess they are too expensive to really throw around in the air!
