That is Larry Blumer's plane. I did have a picture of the plane with Larry Blumer standing in front of it, taken in late 1944.

I'm not sure if that (the plane in the picture above) is the plane he actually flew in combat or the one he owned after the war.  It appears to be the post war plane as it was seen at Blumer Air Maintenance, in or around Oregon.

It is believed that Blumer's victims that day included Luftwaffe ace Rudi Dassow. This has never been confirmed.

I know at one time the plane he owned after the war had a yellow nose, yellow spinners, and yellow cowls. I did have a picture of it taken from another plane in mid air, with both engines off, and both props feathered. It was signed "Hey Jack, remember when 'Scrap' ". The plane was destroyed in a fatal crash after Blumer sold it, the wreckage is at Kermit Weeks' place.
(J and L model P-38's were sold after the war for $1250, a few earlier models sold for less than $1000)

Notice the post war plane has one more score marker on it for a total of 7.

I exchange emails with a friend of Blumer's, Stan Richardson Jr. Stan said despite the fact that he had more hours in a P-38 than Larry (Stan was not only a combat pilot, but also an advanced instructor in the P-38) he never could get Larry to let him take the P-38 up.

Another good skin would be the P-38 Jack Ilfrey flew before "Happy Jack's Go Buggy", it was called "Texas Terror".

"California Cutie" was flown by Richard Loehnert, and held the theatre record for most missions and most hours flown on the original or any other set of engines. He also shot down two 109s in one day in July 1944. Pics of the pilot and original plane are here:

I'm looking for a picture or pictures of John Lowell's plane. That's one I have not been able to find.

Art Heiden's "Lucky Lady" is featured on a postage stamp.

Another ace in a day in a P-38 was Herb "Stub" Hatch, who shot down six in one day in a raid on Ploesti.
