Like anything else with this game, its the challenge that's fun.

Dead on Widewing... If there was no challenges why would anyone bother to play in the first place...

btw Frank, that screanie wasnt shot in H2H it was in the MA...

You're all pansies. :D Landing little pisspot fighters on the CV is nothing. Land a bomber on the CV! I've done it - here it is. A ju88 on the carrier deck. Doh! - different game. Oh well, at least Hitech will get a chortle out of it. ;):lol

By the way, what's the big deal about landing at Danbury,CT? I've flown over that in a Socata TB9 - took a detour when flying from Duchess County/Poughkeepsie back to Westchester. Can't remember anything special about it.

Well you did say your SA sucks. :D

Danbury doesn't get special till your on short final.  It isn't overly difficult, but being surrounded by 7 to 800 foot hills makes it different from most airports where there are no obstacles on short final.  The elevation is 450 feet, but the TPA is 1700 feet, because of the obstacles.

Runway 8 has the least obstructions, but still cant afford an ILS because the approach is greater than the 3% grade needed for an ILS.

Runway 17 doesn’t have any major obstacles on short final after you clear the hill where Wester CT University WCSU sits.  It does have a nice view as you pass a 100 feet or so over the mall, it's parking lot light posts and road.

Runway 35, drops you on final between two  tight hills on either side.  I don't know the actual width, but they are at least 6-800 feet high.  So you basically fly through a narrow trough with some interesting wind currents throughout.

Runway 26, has an 800 foot light pole in the direct path on short final, marking the hill it sits on.  Once you pass over it, you drop about 600 feet on a very short final.

Takeoff on rw 8 sucks if it’s a hot day an you are close to max gross.  You have to clear the 800 foot hill to get out of there.

Takeoff on 35 is nice because if you cant clear the WCSU hill, you can just bear left and follow the roadway till your high enough.

Takeoff on 17, is nice, blowing through the valley.

Takeoff on 26 is nice and easy as long as you stay on runway centerline for the first 800 feet.

Again, it's not overly difficult, but it has many pitfalls and potential dangers that make it a bit more challenging than the majority of airports where the surrounding area is flat and un-obscured.

To really understand DXR you have to land there, then do some crosswinds there.  Then you will understand completely, if you can handle DXR the majority of airports will be a breez.:D

Landing bombers on CVs is cake walk.

Done it just about every time I take up 17s on trinity... Take enough fuel to get over target turn around and shoot striaght for that CV out to sea.

Then post the film/pics next time you do it. :D

Mars01!  Thanks for taking the time to explain all that about DXR. It was 1995 when I made that flight. I remember passing Danbury, but didn't concern myself with the various landing caveats. Hehe, I enjoyed flying in the US - a very large map! - lol. On the small Euro maps there were some interesting fields...
  • Hinton-in-the-Hedges! Runway length 464 metres. Trees on the approach. I put a PA28 down there - was OK. My club manager wanted to relocate there. I talked him out of it - think of all the accidents...
  • Propriano, on the Mediterranean island of Corsica. The downwind leg takes you behind a hill, putting the airfield out of view. The French are fond of stringing wires between hills. The airport was closed, so rather than fly behind hills I went for a straight in with plenty of height!
  • Popham - approach flown at 30° to runway to avoid overflight of garage/gas station - tricky for occasional visitors.
  • Mountain airfields in Europe. These are fields near ski resorts. Some have a runway slope of 1-in-12. After touching down (always on the upslope direction), you had to apply full power to make it to the top of the runway. Go arounds not an option. Many accidents, some fatal. I decided not to be a hero, and avoided such fields.

B-26 can turn around on the CV deck due to the nose wheel. Neat when you have landed and need to taxi back to the rear of the CV for take-off.

NP,

Yeah I could imagine some of the airports over there.  Keeps us on our toes.  I would like to someday get some time in Europe.  I think that would be cool to fly between the different countries, over historic battle fields etc.

I love getting PIREPS about other airports.  It's always interesting to hear.

I read about an airport in Hawii, in AOPA magazine a couple months ago, supposedly has the strongest crosswinds most of the time.  Sounded fun.:D

Another tricky one in the NE is Mt Snow Airport, in  VT.  This one is situated between two mountains and has some intersting wind currents.  I was on short final there in a 152, just over the trees, when all of a sudden the nose just dropped out from under me, down and to the left.  I applied power, kicked the rudder, rolled the wings back to level and got back on centerline and was on the ground 5 seconds later.  Talk about pucker factor lol.  I love every minute of that crap.

A fun thing to do at DXR is call for a short approach while on a left downwind for 35.  You come in over the top of the hill at tree top level, drop into the valley, trees on either side, between the hills and slip it in.  Alot of people will stop at the road that passes the approach end of 35 and watch.  It's funny to watch the peoples faces in the car when your slipping in.

You guys havn't LANDED until you LANDED at AFN - Jaffery NH. Had to put down there a few times because Springfield VT was fog'd under because of the river. Not only is it <2000 feet and in the mountains of NH, but its got a nice upslope and the best ****ing ice cream this side of the north east! Within a bricks hurl of the departure end of 18.
