Canon 300D (Digital Rebel) firmware upgrade
« on: April 16, 2004, 01:13:37 PM »
There is already an alternative firmware for 300D availible.

If you've purchased Canon 300D/Digital Rebel camera, you got very good digital camera, which can deliver high quality digital pictures, however, this camera lacks some features available in more expensive models like Canon EOS 10D. The features that are missing are selectable AF mode, selectable metering mode, flash exposure compensation, etc. If you are not ready to buy Canon EOS 10D but you want some more features to be available in your camera, you can improve it by applying modified firmware.

More detailed feature list: http://satinfo.narod.ru/en/index.html

Download page is still in Russian only: http://satinfo.narod.ru/download.html

I don't have a 300D, but I hope some of you guys can find it usefull.

How reliable is the upgrade?
People with D300's might be leary of messing with the "brains" of their cameras.
Any unofficial firmware upgrades not supported by Canon will void any warranty.
Hard to trust things 100% anymore as there are too many malicious people out there with too much time on their hands.

I just gave a link...

From what I read there - D300 "boots" from a memory card, and uploads a firmware from there. I amy be mistaken, but if you have a back up memory card with old firmware - you can "roll back" to original without any problems...

Unfortunately the guy doesn't have a forum there, but I'll look for feedback from the users tomorrow and inform you.

Thanks.
I have the 10D so it won't help me but MiniD has the Digital Rebel (Shooting really good pictures I might ad) so it might improve his camera's feature set.

Instructions for upgrade:

Sell the DRebel.
Buy the D70.
Only way to get all the features of the D70.
Canon's stuck in an unusual position. I wonder what their answer will be. At the very minimum, they need to unlock the DRebel's potential by getting rid of the firmware handicap, and dropping the price. Don't get me wrong as the DRebel takes some mighty fine images. The D70 is the better camera...for now.
I wonder what the feature set of the 10D MkII will be.

For anyone just getting into a DSLR camera and not having any lenses, the D70 has got to be at the top of the list.

Unlocking the firmware would be better, but I wonder how succesful they would be at communicating the new value... So a price drop may well be needed.. BTW Canon just relesed an all black D300 in Japan, so they are trying...
