can't alt-tab back into game
« on: April 20, 2004, 06:27:20 PM »
all

I've got a radeon 9600 pro (ATI model) and Win XP pro, I  was useing rage 3D, I did a reinstall on the radeon drivers (most current) and a reinstall on AH. I have NOT reinstalled Rage 3D. All Vid card settings are default.

All game play is great, with about 70-85 FPS rate. However, when I try to ALT-Tab out (or use the windows key) I can not get back into game, all i get is a flashing white screen (like storbe light). I have to restart game to get back in.

I have no other apparent problems with windows or AH.

Not a huge problem, but not right, and it just started doing this.

Thx Sled

Try this before you uninstall and reinstall anything:
Change the resolution of the game to one different from your desktop.  If they're already different, read the thread SKurj referenced for other ideas.  You might have to change both desktop and game resolution to values different from their current ones and from each other (that's what I did through trial and error after SKurg put me on it).  In my case once I made them different the problem went away.  Just to see what would happen, I made them both 1280 x 1024 x 32bit (original values with ALT-TAB problem) and the problem did not recurr.

Thanks for your help guys, and your solutions worked!

SKurj, as for my apparent laziness. I have done some looking on the BB for answers to this problem, but most of what I found was "yeah it happens, something to do with the Vid card drivers, try not to ALT-Tab." Not much of a solution. I have had this problem for about a month now, and haven't done any searching for it in about 2 weeks. In a nut shell, I've been a little on the busy side, and I've been lucky to spend 5-8 hours a week in the MA, much less spending time looking for a problem that is a minor one at worst. I also noticed that the post that you directed me to, with your solution on it, is only TWO days old.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your help, and it worked like a charm. I apologize for not looking harder, but like I said it looks to me that the solution has only arisen in the last two days.
