If there is any of the U.S. liberals here who like to argue the merits of gun control that would like to see the other side...

I have offered to take anyone in the game who comes by shooting.. that is still open but...

I would like one of the U.S. BB dwellers who really feel that they are making intelligent decisions about firearms ownership... someone like MT or gofaster to take me up on this offer.

The offer is this. If they will read the book.. I will buy it for them. The book is John Lotts "The Bias Against Guns". It is much easier to read than his first book but just as footnoted... in fact, if you don't want to read the foot notes and graphs and charts you would only really be reading about half the pages. It is not near as dry as his first book which is allmost solid data but I believe this work, like the last, was first submitted as an academic work so some of it is still a little dry.

The book makes the case that the media is extremely biased on firearms issues and that most of what people think they know about guns and gun control is false.

not rich here but I will buy one copy for the guy who seems most interested.

The book even talks about earlier books data and speaks to the critics who claim some of the data may not be accurate (it was submitted before publication).

If you read only one book on the other side of gun control then one of lotts is what you need to read.

Alternately, if more raw data is your passion... I will purchase the older work.

even Lotts detractors in the liberal crowd will admit that his books are meticulously researched and footnoted. Nothing else even comes close to putting all the data in one place.

I'll look it up in the library. You've made some interesting observations that, to be fair, have piqued my interest. If the book is mainstream circulation, my local library should have it.

In the event it doesn't, is there something else along the same lines?

I'm all for the 2nd. I wish they could install a chip into the guns that acted as a lojack to recover stolen guns, but that technology may be years away.

There is one argument by the gun crowd that I do not buy though, that if there is a gun in the house and the theif knows, he won't rob your house. I don't know what city they live in, but if you go around bragging about the weapons cache you have, don't be shocked if your house does get robbed.

I was thinking the same thing.

Also, nothing stopping the robber from stealing your guns while you're away, and then your gun ends up getting used by the criminal down the road.

I doubt that you will find it in a library unless you have a very fair one... The first book was a "bestseller" tho.

gofaster... no.. there is nothing else like it (them).. most books (pro or con) are rife with unproved data or emotion. there is nothing else like em.

Also.. be aware. the first book was meant as a paper to be read by fellow academics and so was distributed widely amoung the academic anti gun crowd who tried to pick it apart.

do I put you down as one of the people who might be interested in my offer? I would love to hear your opinion on the book(s).

You can save your cash. All 5 branches of my library have it and its checked out at 2 of them. Its in the "New Book" section. I'll try to get down there on Sunday and pick it up.

Actually, I take the blade off when i'm not using the skillsaw, I would do the same if I had a chainsaw. A little work, but safety first.

I will most definitely take you up on the shooting offer next time I go to the Sac. area. But I'll check out the book here at the library.

Maybe you mistake me for someone who is anti-gun. Far from it sir. I have never said guns are bad, just made the point that you don't necessarily have a constitutional right to own them.

dweeb.. I have revolvers and in 44 mag and 44 and some historical guns and a kimber and witness in 45 ... ppk Walther and Makarov.. WWII riflles and such... eclectic selection but no glocks.

sixpense... can't they just go to Kmart and buy a blade? Maybe we could get mr moore to wheel some cripples up to Kmarts offices and get em to not sell the blades?

go faster.. do they have both books? I am kinda surprised even tho they are bestsellers... The "Bias afgainst guns" book is by far the less dry of the two.. but still has a lot of data. One book covers the advantages of more guns in the populace while the other explains how the media has treated gun issues in a biased manner.

MT.. I believe that we do have a constitutional and a human right to own em but smarter people than us have differing opinions on both sides.. I also think that it is pretty much proven that unless human nature changes radicaly... we need em. and they do more good than harm.
