Lots of problems with new vid card
« on: September 25, 2003, 04:11:45 AM »
Ok. New radeon 9600 PRO 128mb fireblade card isnt working ok.

My computer crashes with new radeon. But only with games. First I thought it was doing it only with AH but then I tried Tour of Duty demo and same thing.

You can play for a while but suddenly computer boots itself.

My system:

Asus A7V333 mobo, AMD XP1800, 2 x 256mb ddr pc2100 + 1 x 512mb ddr pc2100. (kingstons)
2 x network adapters, HP CDRW, 20GB harddrive (7200rpm maxtor) XP PRO ( all servicepacks installed, latest DX9.)
300W powersupply.

Possible reasons:

1. card is broken
2. my 300w power isnt enough
3. XP needs reinstall (it havent been stable enough even before new card.)

I tried 2 different drivers. Newest and the ones that came with new card.

I also installed AH again but it didnt help.

Do you have any other things in you mind I should check?

Most likely its the power supply you need at least 400 watts

Power supply is a definate candidate here.  When you start a 3D game the video card power draw increases substantially.

Just a related question....

Can a poor power supply cause substandard graphics as well, or is it just going to crash ?

Just wondering something. A friend of mine has a pc with a 95 watt micro power supply and he bought the same card. I told him 95 watt is barely enough for a light bulb and he will have to buy a new power supply. How the hell didn't that system crash. I made a bet for 50 bucks on that damn thing. I was for sure it would crash. I have seen systems crash with less than he has in his pc.
