109G-10 article
« on: October 05, 1999, 04:18:00 PM »
For those of you interested in reading about the flight characteristics of a real life 109G-10 (Black 2), check out this month's Flight Journal magazine.

Here is a short summary:

Taxi:
The tail is reluctant to swing around, must push stick forward and add power to start a turn.  No forward view.  Plane rocks and rattles.

Takeoff:
The plane tracks easily down the runway until the tail comes up, then it tends to veer left.  He made it sound pretty easy.  20 degrees of flaps.

Flight:
Nice handling at low and medium speeds, heavy stick at higher speeds.  No rudder trim.  The pilot evaluated it as a better dogfighter than a P-51, but not quite as good as a Spit(no model given).  He has flown all 3.  At high speed he says the P-51 was much better.  His flight experiences were at lower altitudes.

He liked the slats.  The only historical problem mentioned with them is that without rudder trim the pilot often skidded during a turn, which caused the slats to open asymetrically, throwing off the gunnery.

Landing:
Very good low-speed handling, easy to 3-point, just don't let it get too slow.  The rollout is tricky.  Start with 10 or 15 degrees of flaps, then crank the rest down approaching final.

Good article, very timely.

Attention, has anyone checked AH G-10's main landing gear? Does it have those red bands indicating MW 50?

There should not be red bands now, I haven't found GM-1 or MW 50 in current production model (v0.33)

<scratches head confused>

Color? I've never even thought to look at the landing gear that close at all.
Granted I usually just hit .fly, wipe my sweaty palms down, hit E, pray several times real fast to Cod and try and take off in that 109.
But to see if the oleo/struts are a particular color?????

 Why?

Westy,

Note the red bands on the picture of "Black" 2 above.
It signifies GM-1 or MW 50 power boost (or both, I cant remember which) fitted to late war 109's

Wells tested the G10 and got 425mph as I recall.  This implies boost, no?

Laika,
AFAIK Black 6 is about to be restored back to airworthy  condition. DASA wanted to have it back flying at the Messerschmidt anniversary but neither Black 6 nor the 262 that's beeing built new in Texas madeit in time.

BTW:In the oct. Issue of german "Fliegermagazin" they write about Conny Edwards from Big Spring TX who "helped" the motion picture people get rid of  the "crap" after finishing "Battle of Britain"
This guy took ALL 15 spanish 109 G's back home to Texas and threw them in some of his hangars. He even owns the only 109 two seat trainer to be known, some Spit and P51's . All planes on the few pictures  are in BAD condition, but  Edwards seems not to care or in need of any money. However he intends to sell one 109, one spit and a P51 together for about $2 000 000
see the only pic they have online at
 http://WWW.Fliegermagazin.de

Cheers
