Man acquitted of murdering 14-year-old pregnant girl and fetusBy Theo Emery, Associated Press | April 29, 2004A jury found a Boston man innocent Thursday of charges he stabbed and beat his 14-year-old girlfriend, who was pregnant with his child, then buried her alive on the grounds of an abandoned mental hospital.ADVERTISEMENT The Suffolk Superior Court jury deliberated for more than two days before acquitting 22-year-old Kyle Bryant of two first-degree murder charges -- one each for the girl and her unborn child. Bryant faces no other charges and will be allowed to go free.Prosecutors said Chauntae Jones was battered and bleeding from stab wounds, but still breathing, when Bryant and a friend buried her on the grounds of the Boston State Hospital in September 1999.After the verdict was announced, the victim's wailing mother, Pamela Jones, had to be restrained by court officers after she left the courtroom then tried to re-enter."We always respect the jury's decision," said David Procopio, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley. "However, we felt that the evidence was sufficient to warrant a different outcome. Our thoughts are with the Jones family and the memory of their daughter and her unborn child."Assistant District Attorney David Meier said Bryant, who was 17 at the time, plotted to kill the girl with his boyhood friend, Lord Hampton, so Bryant could avoid a statutory rape charge. He said the two went to the hospital grounds beforehand to dig her grave. Jones disappeared on Sept. 28, just a short time after starting eighth grade. She was eight months pregnant at the time. But defense lawyer John Salsberg said Bryant never hurt Jones or their unborn child and wasn't worried about the possibility of a rape charge. They blamed Hampton, who was homeless and sometimes stayed with Bryant, saying he was a drug and alcohol user.During the trial, the jury heard a tape of one of Bryant's statements to police. In it, he said he watched "like a dummy" but did nothing while the girl pleaded with Bryant to intervene as Hampton stabbed her and bludgeoned her with a rock, then buried her.Bryant eventually brought police to the grave site and showed them where to find the shovel, according to court documents filed by prosecutors.Hampton, 25, has pleaded innocent to two charges of first-degree murder and will be tried separately. No trial date has been set.The jury also had the option of convicting Bryant of second-degree murder charges, but chose instead to acquit him of all charges."I'm relieved, of course, for my client, Mr. Bryant, and his family," Salsberg said, adding that he feels "very badly" for Jones and her family. "But I don't think that anyone in the city is going to forget what happened."
