Going rafting today
« on: May 01, 2004, 06:34:52 AM »
Bought a four-person coleman raft.  Friend and I are going to take it down a 7 mile stretch of stream.  Stream has some small riffles and rapids, but nothing that would hurt the raft (I hope).  Hope to see some wildlife (stream is in a preserve) and get some good photos.

It has been raining pretty hard this week, so if you hear about two young men being swept away in a coleman raft in Kentucky, you know who it was hahah.

Rafting went well.  Had a heck of a good time.

Heres the stream that my friend and I traveled down.  Was a bit high due to recent rains.

Our raft became lodged on this brush pile.  All was fine until water began pouring into the raft.  Fortunately I had all my gear tied to the raft.  All throughout the river were fallen trees that we had to either go over, under, or portage around.  Some situations actually became a bit dangerous.  An air chamber on the boat punctured on one of these trees (leaving us with 3 out of 4).

After about five miles of light (and fun) rapids, the water began to deepen and things slowed waaaaaaay down.  This picture illustrates how slow the traveling went on the second half of the stream.  Had to paddle about three miles in this type of water.

Its the Ohio River, we are saved!  Now just an easy two miles down river, and we will be at our cars.

Disaster!  The wind was blowing so hard that even with the current, we could not paddle on the Ohio River.  We pulled our little raft on the shore, took all of our gear out of it, and left it there.  We found some train tracks to walk on after hiking along the shore line.  A big thunderstorm rolled upon us about 5 minutes after I took this picture.  What a miserable two mile walk.

Hey look, a fox.
