Install problems
« on: May 03, 2004, 12:43:44 PM »
Hello everyone!

I just bought a ECS  K7S5A Pro and am trying to install XP on an Maxtor 80gb hd.  I keep on receiving various BSOD's when I get to the "Setup is installing Windows" screen.  They range in 0x0000008e and 0x000000c5 codes.  A few friends have told me that it's related to memory.  So, with the fact that I'm still using PC133, I tried 3 different sticks ranging from 128mb to 256mb on both "slots".  All of them failed with the same error.  I'm about to give up on building my own computers because this made me so mad.

1st what cpu are you running ??? 2.0ghz and/or bigger ?

I know you can load XP on that mb while using 133 sdram
(ive done it on the same mb and ram combo but with a 1.6ghz cpu)

If the ram fails or isnt compatable it will give off a series of "Beeps" during boot .  if its ok it gives off one long Boot "Beeeeeeeeep"

you dont have a copy of 98se around and a start up disk do you ?
It may need the basic drivers loaded to get the cdrom/ hd to work .  Ive had that problem befor .

also can you hit the delete key during boot and get to the bios screen ??? you may have to go to the "cpu pnp setup page " in the bios and set the
cpu freq  100 mhz
dram freq 100 mhz

for the first boot and os install  (sdram on that mb doesnt alway like to get set at 133 mhz

this may help you out also (the killer how to for the ecs k7s5a mb)

Its the memory, or its location on the board.  How many sticks of memory you got?

If only one, move the stick around into a different slot.

I had that issue as well on my older K7S5A, and when I moved my single stick of 256MB of RAM from one slot to the other (from 1 to 2? - its been a while, I've forgotten)  WinXP installed with no issues, and ran stably.

Thanks for the replies!  I attempted to install W98SE on the computer also.  It made it thru the install process ok.  However, when it was booting up Windows 98SE was trying to autoinstall the drivers it kept running into problems on the USB drivers along with a few others.  I finally gave up on the mb and returned it for the $70 that I paid.  The processor that I was using was a 1.3ghz Duron.

i'll tell ya the secret even though its too late but it may help later on.

for 98se i always do a manual select of what i want to install ,
with xp it just auto runs ..

some mb's dont like to install the drivers from an OS until its mb drivers are installed .(the lan driver should of been ignored as for 98se doesnt have the right one for the ecs mb in it)

some pc's dont do enough of a shut down when they do restarts when installing an os or drivers ect . and they need to be turned off compleatly and restarted .

when installing vga, sound, lan ,ect drivers its always best to just install one driver set at a time then restart.
