Dry lake beds are a blast.
When I was a kid, the family weekended on El Mirage. We went mostly to sail (land yachting) typical speeds of 60 mph silently. (Except for the sound of the wind.) Dad did 85 once, then spun out with loss of traction... ended up doing about 60 backwards.
When the wind didn't blow, dirt bikes, dune buggies, r/c flying, shooting, pull out the telescopes at night.
Gyrocopters were out there most weekends looking for calm days, the SCTA had a few meets a year and garage mechanics would time thru the flying mile speed trap, and the soaring center is a world class place to catch thermals. Sailplanes circled like vultures, five or six in a single thermal.
It was a great place to be a kid.
