Ship guns now independently destroyed...
« on: May 13, 2004, 12:32:35 PM »
...which is something I've been wanting for a long time.  Question: What does it look like when a gun gets taken out on a ship now?  Fire? Smoke? Big gapping hole in the deck?  Or does it register graphically at all?

I also keep hoping for fire, smoke, listing ship, oil slicks, etc.  Plus of course, I want direct helm and engine control so I can go to dead-slow while I dual with that pesky shore battery.  We ran a Snapshot back when I was with the CM Corp called "Battlecruisers at Jutland" some time back.  Two opposing squadrons of cruisers, where each cruiser was under independent command of a player (the old Philippines map, with a couple dozen fleets made it possible.  We also allowed people a one-time spawn in PT boats in the first minute of the event.  Also, each side got two unarmed search planes to locate the opposing fleet.  It was a blast!  Once your PT was sunk, you could go man one of the cruiser guns.  The biggest trick was to keep in formation; this was hard because speed is fixed and the only directional control was via changing of waypoints.  Anyone ever notice that when you change a waypoint direction the ship overshoots repeatedly before finally settling down on the new course?  Please can we have actual rudder control and engine control?  Pretty Please?

I have to admit, this is the holy grail for me.

Not just the Surface warfare aspects (this is after all Aces "Hi") But the air war aspects as well. The fleets in AH were amazing to me when I first came here, because they moved from point A to point B, which made them behave much more realistically than the... errr other sim I had been used to playing.

I'm hoping that in the future... someday... far away... Ships will have a more complex damage model than they have now. Ships are either afloat, or not. I'd love to see bombs have a variable effect on a ship depending on where the bomb hits, along the lines of what we have for Aircraft and GVs today.

But this sounds like a game unto itself, and I'm not going to hold my breath.

There are a lot of things in the pipeline for AH, such as the addition of submarines and even a first-person shooter implementation for base capture.  Towed artillery, too.  When subs are added, there will be a need for ASW capability to counter it; not just airborne weapons for a/c (though that too), but for some type of player-controlled sub-chaser.  The current DE 3D model could be used as a start, but with the addition of ASW weapons and some sort of sonar and hydrophone station for the player to man (kind of like the bombardier's position on buffs, I suspect.

to make subs viable you need slow naval targets.

carriers doing 45mph at all times are all but immune to sub attacks unless they make submarines like pt boats that can spawn....

omg

that would rock

just add submarine uboat or somthing in like a pt boat thats spawnable. maybe perk it? lol who knows.

with a circle of spawns around a base it would get heavy usage as it would be immune to acks and be very stealthy.
Fester was my in game name until September 2013

Citabria, the way Dale described it to me, there would be a "wolf pack" object akin to a AH task group.  You would maneuver it the same way as fleets, i.e. with waypoints.  Then, when it was in position, you would spawn subs from the wolf pack, just like PT boats are spawned from fleets.  That, at least, was the original concept as I understood it.  There are of course many questions that would need answering, such as how do you "sink" a wolf pack so that it can not spawn any more U-boats?  Will fleets have automatic ASW defenses, as well as player-controlled ones?
