im having the following problems on my
1.1ghz amd athlon xp
256 mb ddr ram
GF2 mx 400
soundblaster LIVE! soundcard
windows XP home

symptoms
1. the computer starts up in 4 bit colour...
2. after logging in a error message pops up saying NV*****.dll failed to initialize
3. before it started starting up in 4 bit colour any modernish game i tried to play said something about D3d failing to initialize...other said there was not enough video memory

and previous to all this we had gotten in the habit of starting up in VGA mode because we had to hook it up to a old monitor (from 1989) that could only run in 640 * 480

anyone know what the cause and solution to these problems are?

Can't say for sure....

If ya have another card laying around you could test with to make sure its nothing to do with the mobo. Reinstall vid drivers and dx.
If still no go... spend $35 on a new card.

installed new (actually there old drivers that i still had the install on my harddrive) drivers...seemed to take care of the error message and low colour pallete...its not letting me reinstall directX but ill try download the patch to get from 9.0a to b...

but i think the computer thinks my video card is plugged into pci port 1 after installing the drivers...but it is in fact plugged into the agp port...

Not sure but PCI 1 and AGP may share an IRQ...

In the BIOS is it set to initialize AGP first?

vort i would try uninstalling the nvidia drivers thru add/remove....then reinstall (if you installed the drivers over an existing install that may have caused the problem)

Your nVidia Detonator drivers for your video card are either corrupted or did not install properly. Uninstall them from the control panel -> add/remove programs and redownload a driver from http://www.nvidia.com and then reinstall the driver. If that doesn't work, be sure an AGP to PCI bridge or something similar is listed under device manager.

all that has agp is the cpu to agp controller...

i figure that i COULD spoof AH into recognizing my card by replacing my video7.cfg file (or at least the correct line) with the correct line wich could be got from someone else with a similar card
