Cherrypickers take heart!

Did anyone else see the program about the Red Baron last night? Baron Von Richtofen (no time to check the spelling) scored 80 kills in WW1 and was much feared by the allies. The narrator commented that most experienced pilots would sit on the fringes [of a furball] and pick off stragglers. Said experienced pilots would always establish an advantage over their quarry. Just like Aces High!

Indeed, the Red Baron himself came to grief when he wandered (alone) too deep into allied territory. A computer aided re-enactment, plus interviews with a 104 year old Australian survivor of the war led investigators to believe that the RB had been shot by a single bullet fired from a .303 rifle on the ground.

He saw a Camel flying through the furball firing wildly so he knew the pilot was a newbie.  He chased after him for an easy kill and ended up dead.

Incidentally, a lot of the WWII aces also looked for easy kills to run up their score.

the press is partially to blame for that for promoting the horse race among Boyington, Foss and others for the race to break Rickenbacher's number.  I remember from books about Boyington that it put him under a lot of pressure he didnt need at the time.
