Head On Shots!
« on: November 18, 2000, 08:48:00 AM »
Why is it that some people dont like HO encounters. Some people seem to get upset if they are HO'd and I'm wondering why. It dose'nt bother me if I'm engaged in this way, I try and nose down to make it more difficult and if I don't die I try and kill the bandit. I'm not suggesting anything here, I just wondered what the issue is.

It always gets me though,in the half second after an encounter you think to yourself "phew, he missed!" then the FE registers the hits and yer wings fall off.

I hate it when some one calls ya a "head on dweeb" if your in a loaded p47 and there is a spit commin at ya what the hell else are ya gonna do?

And for all you jerks that whine when someone HO's you remember, It takes 2 to HO so if you have a prob with it you turn or something dont just fly straight at someone and then whine when a HO happens.

Hey Ddriag, you just live up the road from me!  I'm trying to keep track of all the locals and perhaps we can organise a big meet up (piss up) sometime!

I think people don't like HO attacks because they maximize three of the most unrealistic features of AH:

Net Lag
No Fear of Death
Range Icons

So a master of the HO attack is someone who is a master of exploiting the most unrealistic parts of the sim.

Certainly there can't be much of a historical argument against HO attacks.  I've read a lot of pilot accounts of dogfights and many pilots report making HO attacks.  They seem especially prevalent among pilots facing an enemy with inferior armor or firepower, e.g. Thunderbolt pilots or almost any pilot facing a Japanese fighter.

Personally, I avoid them because if the other guy has any ability, they are a 50-50 proposition.  I will only take such a shot out of neccesity, e.g. if I am vastly outnumbered, if the other guy has vastly better E, if the other guy has vastly better airplane, or if I have to take the shot to save a friendly unit I am escorting.

HO shots are the equivalent of "cow tipping" in that it takes next to no skill to do.

Course, if I find myself outnumbered by cows  in a fight I go berserk and I'll fight any old way I can to even the numebers      So I've been known to "tip" a cow or two in a furball.

And then again, if I'm in a P-47 or P-38 and some fool in a plane is coming right for me and it's obvious they are going to do "you know what" well, unless it's an F4U-1C, I'll oblige them with a dose of it first. And I usually win now. I often even say to them on channel one "don't come at me HO Spit/Niki/Yak/whatever cause you'll be going down!" but they usually don't listen.

My only objection to HO,s is the spit v. They are modeled to turn to fast for the net. When it is not where it appears to be. It is hard to avoid the HO. This is increased by the weaker servers in H2H.

So, you can always tell the weak pilots in H2H. They host and fly this "gamer" to HO anything in sight.

Mora, that's why i dont' take HO's  . If I have to I'll squeeze a shot off, but generally I'll just avoid it and lead turn, setting me up to kill the other guy much easier, since he tried to aim at me when he should have been turning.

Right!
I've canvassed your opinions on HO-ing. Apart from boring Hangtime I found out more about a game I'm new at so thanks all. The idea that launching into an early turn might make more sense is one I'm going to explore. It's got the right balance between aggression and suicide for me!

Replicant, whats your handle in the Game?
Oakham is on my "tearing around the countryside on motorbike" route. Very high council tax tho'.

I could be wrong, but I think the HO is way more effective in AH than in RL.  The small aspect of the target, plus the chance of glancing shots (ammo just deflecting off the surface with out detonation(cannon) doing very little damage).

A reduction of the effectiveness of the HO would be a good thing.
