Ilyushin Il-76 Crashed
« on: May 18, 2004, 01:31:44 AM »
Ilyushin Il-76 has crashed in NW of China. Sounds as if someone messed up with the weight and balance.

The Russian-made Ilyushin Il-76 cargo jet crashed shortly after take-off, raising fears all seven crew members had perished.

No bodies have been recovered and so far there is no word about casualties on the ground.

According to Xinhua, "the plane was burnt and destroyed" in the crash that took place at 10:50 a.m. (0250 GMT).

The plane took off from Urumqi airport, the capital of the Xinjiang region, and was on its way to Baku in Azerbaijan.

Your pic is broken, mate.

When I was a light plane pilot, I was appalled by how many people were either ignorant or cavalier about weight and balance. How does it affect helicopters?

to all those who perished. I'll look for the prayer thread later.

Beet1e,

Weight and Balance limitations are just as critical for helo's as it is for fixed-wings.  I witnessed a CH-53 crash because the internal load wasn't secured and when the pilot put it in a +60 degree angle of bank the load shifted (55 gallon drums), consequently the aircraft was out of lateral CG limitations and it spiraled in, unfortunately there were no survivors due to post impact fire.  The old days of picking up to a hover to check the CG is long gone thankfully.

Pic worked fine for me.

That is one big plane.  Are those windows in the bottom half of the nose?

yeah..  for the navigator, can you believe it :D
Russian planes do have more crew than cargo... well.. not really but it feels that way.
They do have lots of crew onboard these IL-76's compared to western aircrafts.

Two pilots, navigator, engineer, maybe a radio operator.

I really want to ride at the navigator's cabin of IL-76 on takeoff or landing...

As for the crash - can you imagine an Azerbaijanian plane taking off from Urumchi, that is a capital of shuttle-tradinig between China and ex-USSR?... IL-76 is believed to take off only because of the curvature of the Earth's surface, and in this case I wonder how many goods could they fit into the cargo compartment...

If they are still operating like they used to it was most likely overloaded with cargo. The pilots used to take cash on the side from people and try to fit as much crap as they could onto planes in the old ussr.

With an Azrbarjanian crew I think it may be like that. With Russian crew I think that "shuttle-traders" simply didn't let the crew stop them from loading as much as could fit there... :(
