Pyro - will aircraft skins be available for all theatres?
« on: May 20, 2004, 09:19:49 AM »
Just curious how the skins will work... are they 'arena' specific?  I.e. MA has it's own skins, CT has it's own skins, and SEA has it's own skins...

Or are they drawn from one big repository for ALL arenas?

They are used across all arenas.

Pyro, could you clarify this... when the Terrain Team builds a custom terrain for a Special Event, will we be able to build our own custom "event-specific" skins into that terrain, or will we have to choose from the "all arenas" collection?

Dux, I think you will still be able to change the default skin of a plane in a specific terrain.  But why would you want to do it that way rather than just submitting it as an optional skin?

Greebo did excellent job on VBF-83 F4U-1D skin for Okinawa and hope replace the old AH1 VBF-83 F4U-1D skin.

Because I'd still like to see wilder, non-historic skins for wilder, non historic events such as (for instance) plane racing (virtual Reno, anyone?) and especially King of the Hill.

Since we're limited to 15 skins (as I understand it), how many skins will have, say, a desert or winter scheme?  Two or three of each?

It'd be nice if we could pick from 5 or 10 winter schemes on Finrus or other seasonal terrains, instead of the two or three universal winter schemes for a particular model.

But I'll be content if I can just pick between two or three winter skins.  :)

Thanks, Pyro.

Perhaps we're not understanding exactly how it's going to work... We'd really like to have (in a Battle of Britain terrain, for example) 15 different Hurricane Mk.1 skins and 15 different Spitfire Mk.1 skins, all historically accurate and representing actual squadrons that participated in that battle. If there is a way to have the "collection" of skins specific to the SEA terrain available over the server, that would be fine. But I'm hoping that the number of skin choices available to the SEA are not limited because the SEA must use the same collection of skins as the MA and other arenas... i.e., a bunch of desert skins for those planes would not be useful to us in that specific scenario.

Is there a way we can work this?

oh, and thanks, Furball. :)

With the 15 skins per plane limit some skins may only be "wanted" for a specific scenario rather then being a "main" skin.

As Dux said scenarios could easily use close to 15 skins per plane per side.

BoB may not be a good example because how many hurri 1 or spit 1 or 109e4 skins can you have that aren’t BoB?  I would imagine the majority of the 15 skins for each of these planes would be "BoB".

However, take a Big Week or Ruhr type event.

P47s, P51s, 109g6s, 190a8s and 190a5s.

In the main we would want wider range of skins representing various time frames and theaters. Take the A8, we could easily fill up 15 skins from the west, east and Nord fronts....

These types of planes have many options for skinners.  So much so that there may not be room under the 15 plane limit to create the variety of squadron specific skins for an event.

So does the 15 plane limit of skins include skins created specifically for the SEA?

Yeah ditto what Tarmac said.  IF the limit is only 15 skins, how fast will we reach that limit?  How much room will we have to work with when designing a map or event?  I mean, if we want to get anal and have the EXACT squadron skin/markings for a particular theatre, will 15 skins limit our design?

Is the 15 skin limit just an arbitrary number or is there something else limiting it to 15?
