Can the tail wheel be locked in AH2?
« on: May 19, 2004, 02:30:46 PM »
I downloaded beta 33 last night, and when I went to take off in my P-47D-11,  the tail of the aircraft was wanting to roll side to side, almost as if the tail wheel was not locked. I was having to play "kick the rudder left, kick  the rudder right" in order to stay somewhat straight going down the runway. I'm all for more realism, but it seemed that my rudder input, even when trying to be as gentle as possible, was causing the tail to roll even worse.

Which raises the question of can the tail wheel be locked in AH2? I looked under stick mapping, but I didn't find any function for locking the tail wheel.

Good question banana!

I do the same thing, some of the plains are down right hard to take off in!

I've been useing differential braking.
Seems a bit smoother, esp at low speeds.

Still needs a bit of rudder to counter torque, but I tap the brakes as needed to stay centered.

Also I remapped my brakes to  just for easy to remember.

banana, it takes a bit of getting used to but once you've got it, take offs are no problem in AH2.
Here's what I do:
1 notch of flaps (all USAF fighters) and put in full right aileron before begining the take off roll;
Roll the throttle up and let the nose swing to the right - it will swing back on its own. When the nose starts to swing back to the left I put in small amounts of right rudder to counteract that swing and put a little forward pressure on the joy-stick to get some weight off the tail wheel. What you want to avoid here is using a lot of rudder - it's much easier to prevent voilent nose swings than it is to control them once they get started.
As the speed increases and the tail starts to lift I add a bit more rudder because the nose will tend to swing more. Once I'm level with the tail in the air I ease off the right aileron, let the speed build up to about 115- 125mph and ease it off the ground. Gear up right way and flaps up at 150mph.
Use two notches of flaps if you're carrying ordnance but the skit is basically the same.
If you've got your rudder inputs dampened quite a bit, try reducing the level of damping to give you more immediate control input - it will be easier to control that way.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Thanks guys.  I was one of begging for more realistic/challenging take offs, so my original post was not a whine. I just wanted to make sure whether the tail wheel could be locked or not.

Since it sounds like it can't, I'll just dampen my rudder pedals a bit, I think that'll do it for me.

I appreciate the suggestions!

Advance the throttle slower until you get the hang of it.
