HT/Pyro: Suggestions for a new Sky Color
« on: May 17, 2004, 07:03:53 PM »
I'm sure the very recent change in colors was due people complaining that the arena looked too dark.

 Now, the recent colors look very bad, if I may be honest, but it does look bright.

 So that got me thinking - obviously, it isn't any more brighter than it used to be. The sky color, is actually darker in blue both for ColorSky and ColorFog(Day).

 It seems that a more distinct contrast between the dark landscape(I really suggest the land tile/texture should be changed into something much more bright, lush green..) and the darker blue sky, seems to give people the illusion that the day is actually brighter.

 So, here's my suggestion for a 3rd color scheme which is a compromise between the original I've suggested, and so far used, and the very recent one:

 ColorCloud[Day] = 170, 170, 170 (00AAAAAA)
ColorCloud[Dusk] = 170, 170, 170 (00AAAAAA)
ColorCloud[Night] = 20, 20, 20 (00141414)

ColorDuskFog[Day] = 255, 149, 88 (3F5895FF)
ColorDuskFog[Dusk] = 255, 138, 36 (3F248AFF)
ColorDuskFog[Night] = 0, 0, 0 (00000000)

ColorFog[Day] = 181, 212, 255 (3FFFD4B5)
ColorFog[Dusk] = 131, 142, 187 (3FBB8E83)
ColorFog[Night] = 21, 20, 16 (3F101415)

ColorLight[Day] = 255, 255, 255 (3FFFFFFF)
ColorLight[Dusk] = 249, 202, 142 (3F8ECAF9)
ColorLight[Night] = 181, 180, 173 (3FADB4B5)

ColorSky[Day] = 111, 160, 255 (3FFFA06F)
ColorSky[Dusk] = 111, 123, 196 (3FC47B6F)
ColorSky[Night] = 0, 0, 0 (00000000)

ColorSun[Day] = 250, 255, 245 (3FF5FFFA)
ColorSun[Dusk] = 253, 240, 185 (00B9F0FD)
ColorSun[Night] = 255, 105, 0 (3F0069FF)

 ...

 Only ColorFog[Day] and ColorSky[Day] settings have been modified, and the rest remain the same as the original suggestion. I'm pretty confident that this one will make the arena look brighter, and better in color, at the same time.

Both pics are of base A4 in NDIsles, same direction, same time of day. I will post this pic on a full size - see and compare how it looks.

Yes, it looks great, much more realistic.

The sky especially. Much better.

Agreed. Much better. (a little too much magenta tho imo).

Maybe it's interesting....

I always wondered about the Renaissance painter's depiction of the sky color. It's this sort of robin egg blue. I thought it was a sort of artistic license thing.

But when I was in Italy, there it was. The sky is robin egg blue. Since then I've always paid attention to the sky color of wherever I've been. And it's different everywhere ya go.

Texas' sky IS a sort of real punchy blue. Prolly on account of the Gulf of Mexico. But it's not real representative of the sky (especially inland) of most places. And even though much of the Euro Theater was near the ocean.... The North Atlantic does different things to the sky than the Gulf of M or the Med, let alone inland areas such as Russia.

My vote is definitely to desaturate the sucker. It's way too happy blue for a war sky. :)

Agree. Somone remember about the sky in JANE's WWII fighters? I wasn't able to find a screenshot, but it was much more steel grey...

Well, apparently the greyer and grimmer sky people seem to not like .. :p As far a s realism goes, my opinion is the colors before the recent change was way more realistic.

Well, not like completely grey and grim. Just whatever color it actually is that hovers over continental Europe. I mean, the suicide rate isn't so high over there is it? :)

One thing the sky is NOT is the current brilliant blue. Doesn't mean it has to be overcast.

Hmmm yeah.... when I read that at first I balked. Good consideration. That I didn't consider.

But nah, any time ya put two colours together (eg. red icons vs green terrain or blue sky) it's problematic for the average person, let alone the color-blind folks.

Bright icons (and planes) against a toned down sky is waaaaay easier to read than the current neon warz.
