Ok... let's get it all in perspective here...
Adjusted for inflation, the prices are much better than that 70's one plus... in the 70's the cars were crap. the democrat mandated smog devices were crap and acutally killed fuel economy..
what was the result? earlier muscle cars got cheap.. smart guys bought em and stashed em till gas was plentifull and cheap again and the silly smog laws were lifted.
Now... voting one way or the other isn't gonna change prices much at the pumps... That is true... what it will do is make you drive half finished tech and VERY boring cars... mandating fuel economy will simply limit interesting cars... that is what voting democrat will get yu.... hydrogen? why/how would democrats change that? does kerry and klan have secret tech? No? Maybe they would offer "corporate welfare" to corporations to develop these tech? I am sure GM would be glad to take the money the government extorts from us. Maybe a government research center? LOL.
Conversly... the gas prices themselves... the market.. will change what we drive. Prices high enough... a lot of strange folks will be driving the half baked tech around... gas prices stay high... the half baked tech will get a little better and the cars that use it will get a little more useable and reliable... even longer and... they might even get fun.
Good example... when the dems in CA mandated a certain level of "alternative" (their favorite word meaning sucky) fuel vehicles... we ended up with eggheads and weirdos driving half baked electric cars that no one even sees anymore.
no.. vote for dems and have the government interfere and mess everything up or just let the market do the right thing...
and.. Watch the prices on those vipers and vettes and hemis and pick one up to stash.
My elky get's about 12-13 mpg.. I would rather drive half as much or a third as much than be bored.
