Speaking as somebody who actually BOUGHT that "game"...yeah, I guess it was a game. Technically. Actually, it was really just a bunch of subroutines flying in close formation, and a manual written by four non-English speaking Mongolians on an all-weekend crank and booze bender.
The thing about Derek is, unlike Voss, he'll stand and furball with you on forums. Seeing Derek Smart post on a Usenet thread, back in the day, was like watching some poor newb coming up at a capped field and seeing all the vulchers set up a closed left-hand traffic pattern to get a crack at him. Derek would post, we'd knee him in the virtual nuts, he'd keep coming back for more long after anybody else would've just slunk off. Dude's a masochist.
Read the linked thread on the Slashdot article, the one that goes to the HLP Freespace 2 board. Nice to see that Derek's people skills are still as good as his game programming.
