TV series Amazing Stories
The Mission
Story: Steven Spielberg
Teleplay: Menno Mayjes
Director: Steven Spielberg
A courageous young World War II gunner and aspiring cartoonist, trapped in the belly of a B-17 aircraft, has only his imagination as a force that might be able to save him. This one-hour episode boasts a remarkable cast: Giving one of the best performances of his career was future film star Kevin Costner, who had already starred in three movies that same year (Fandango, Silverado and American Flyers) but had yet to have his breakthrough with The Untouchables (1987). Making his screen debut was Anthony LaPaglia, who would go on to star in such films as John Landis' Innocent Blood and play Daphne's ne'er-do-well brother Simon on TV's Frasier. Future 24 star Kiefer Sutherland, making his TV debut, had appeared in only two films by this point, and would go on to great notice in such movies as The Lost Boys, Stand By Me and Young Guns — the latter two of which would co-star Casey Siemaszko, who'd go on to his own prolific film career and in 2002 played Internal Affairs Capt. Pat Fraker on NYPD Blue. Dutch screenwriter Menno Mayjes would go on to write or co-write Spielberg's The Color Purple and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and other movies.
