Kerry to receive the Bill
« on: May 30, 2004, 05:07:52 AM »
the John Kerry for president committee should expect a bill for police overtime charges.

since his recent campaign visit was not a public appearance but instead a private fund raising event the city of Portland is sending his election committee a bill for the cost of police overtime and other security expenses that the city incurred during his visit last week.

(from the Oregonian)

I'm just curious if he'll pay it.

many of the politicians who come to our city to raise money for their  campaigns or to help people they support raise money don't pay to cover the costs their visits generate.

so far the city hasn't forced any of the deadbeats to pay.  but some pay voluntarily.

those who come for public business aren't charged but if it's private fundraisers the city gov't feels it should be reimbursed for the added expense.

I have to agree with the city gov't on the issue, and I think more city's should ask to be compensated for these kind of costs.

the cost to the city for this visit hasn't been released yet, but  high-profile campaigning visits have cost the city over $100k for a single visit in some cases.

I wonder if the good citizens of Portland will be sending a bill to Bush if he even bothers to stop there. Play fair now!
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Who's crying? All I said was what's fair, is fair. If Bush stops for a fundraiser he should be billed, too.

there is more on the story in this mornings newspaper-

actually it has happened, and as with the Kerry event last week, the bill was sent to the group that was running the event he was in town for,  they where one of the deadbeats who skipped out on the bill.  the OT costs for Bush's August 2003 visit was $116,756.

Quote
from the Portland Tribune: The city did not receive reimbursement, and a Bush staff member told city officials that the overtime was not the campaigns responsibility.

aside from Bush and Kerry, the Tribune also published a couple of others who where billed and whether they paid or not.

in 2002 the city sent a bill to republican senator Gordon smiths campaign after visits from Bush, Chaney, and house speaker Denis Hastert (R-ILL), on his behalf, it went unpaid

in that same year a bill was sent to the Bill Bradbury, who was the democrat opposing Smith in that election for OT costs due to visits from Clinton and Tom Dashle,  Bradbury (or his campaign, the article doesn't specify) sent a check for the full amount.

and the latest quote on the situation of the Kerry expenses-

Quote
From the Tribune: "We've not yet received the bill, but when we do, we'll be happy to pay it", said Laura Capps, spokeswoman for John Kerry for President in Washington D.C.  "we're appreciate the police support the city provides"
